What the job actually is

A secondary school teacher spends less than half their actual working hours in front of a class. The rest is planning lessons, marking student work, writing reports, emailing parents, attending meetings, and managing behaviour outside the classroom. The job is part subject-matter delivery, part adolescent welfare work, and part bureaucratic compliance — and the ratio shifts toward the last two as class sizes grow and staff shortages deepen. Opinion

Government (public) schools

Employ roughly two-thirds of secondary teachers in Australia. Salaries follow a published award scale with annual increments. Classes tend to be larger, student populations more diverse in needs, and administrative reporting demands heavier. Permanency is available but increasingly hard to secure in metropolitan areas early in career; rural postings offer faster permanency. Estimate

Catholic systemic schools

Run by diocesan education offices with their own enterprise agreements, typically paying within a few percent of the government scale. Class sizes are often slightly smaller, pastoral care structures are more explicit, and religious education is part of the curriculum regardless of your teaching area. Staff are expected to support the school's Catholic ethos. Estimate

Independent (private) schools

Salaries can exceed or fall below government scales depending on the school. Facilities are often better resourced, co-curricular commitments (coaching, Saturday sport, camps) are higher, and parent expectations around communication and results are more intense. Contract renewal rather than permanency is common. Estimate

Remote and regional schools

Chronic shortages mean faster employment, incentive packages (relocation allowances, subsidised housing, salary loadings of 10-20 percent in some jurisdictions), and broader teaching loads — you may teach across multiple subject areas. Isolation, limited professional support, and staff turnover are real challenges. Estimate

Specialties

STEM subjects (Maths, Physics, Chemistry, IT)

Highest shortage areas nationally. Teachers in these subjects have the strongest bargaining position and are most likely to receive targeted incentives, but must maintain deep content knowledge as curricula update. Many entrants are career-changers from industry. Opinion

English and Humanities

Larger supply of qualified teachers relative to demand, though shortages still exist in regional areas. Heavy marking load due to extended written responses. Roles often include coordination of literacy programs across the school. Opinion

Languages other than English (LOTE)

Severe shortage in most states, particularly for Asian languages. Teachers are often the sole specialist in their school, which limits collegial support but increases job security and mobility. Opinion

Special education and learning support

Involves differentiated instruction for students with disabilities, learning difficulties, or behavioural challenges. Requires additional qualifications in many states. Emotionally demanding but in very high demand with strong career progression pathways. Opinion

Health and Physical Education

Oversupplied relative to other teaching areas in most metropolitan markets. Roles frequently include coordination of sport, outdoor education camps, and wellbeing programs. Weekend sport commitments are common, especially in independent schools. Opinion

Creative and Performing Arts

Covers visual arts, drama, dance and music. Positions are fewer per school, making vacancies less frequent. Often involves running productions, exhibitions, or ensembles outside school hours. Supply generally exceeds demand in cities. Opinion

A week, not a day

There is no typical day. There is a typical week, and it is uneven by design.

BlockRoughlyWhat it looks like
Face-to-face teaching40%Delivering lessons to classes of 20-30 students. In most states a full-time load is 20-22 contact hours across a 44-50 hour actual working week. Includes managing behaviour, running practicals, and differentiating for mixed abilities within the same room.
Planning and resource preparation20%Writing lesson plans, creating worksheets and slides, sourcing materials, adapting curriculum documents, and preparing practical activities. Much of this happens at home in evenings and on weekends.
Marking and assessment15%Grading assignments, writing feedback, moderating standards with colleagues, entering marks into data systems, and writing semester reports. Peaks dramatically during reporting periods — two to three weeks each semester become almost entirely marking.
Administration and compliance10%Attendance records, incident reports, mandatory reporting documentation, Individual Learning Plans for students with additional needs, data entry into school management systems, responding to parent and leadership emails.
Meetings and professional development8%Staff meetings, faculty meetings, year-level meetings, parent-teacher interviews, professional learning sessions, accreditation maintenance. Most schools schedule one to two hours of compulsory meetings after school each week.
Pastoral care and extracurricular7%Homeroom or roll-call duties, yard duty supervision, welfare conversations with students, coaching sport teams, running clubs, supervising excursions and camps. Often unpaid beyond base salary.
Hours
Officially 38 hours per week, but OECD data shows Australian secondary teachers typically work 44-50 hours including preparation and marking done at home on evenings and weekends
Estimate
Travel
Minimal during term — commute to one school site. Some travel for excursions, sport carnivals, and professional development days. Regional teachers may drive 30-60 minutes each way.
Estimate
Physical demands
On your feet most of the day. Voice strain is a common occupational issue. Science and workshop teachers handle chemicals and equipment. Playground supervision in all weather. Emotional and cognitive fatigue is the dominant physical toll.
Opinion
Shift pattern
Standard weekday pattern roughly 8:00am to 3:30pm at school, but preparation, marking and meetings regularly extend to 5:00-6:00pm and into evenings. No night shifts. School holidays (12 weeks per year) offset term intensity, though several weeks are consumed by planning, reporting and professional development.
Estimate

Is it right for you?

An honest self-test. The filter is rarely passion — everyone has that.

Strong signs of fit

  • You genuinely enjoy explaining things in multiple ways until someone understands — not just once, but the same concept five times a day to different groups who each need a different approach. Opinion
  • You can hold authority over a room of thirty teenagers without losing your temper or taking defiance personally. Classroom management is a performance that requires emotional control every single period. Opinion
  • You are organised enough to track obligations for 120-150 individual students simultaneously — their progress, their welfare concerns, their deadlines — while managing your own workload without external supervision. Opinion
  • You find adolescents interesting rather than exhausting. You are comfortable with their developmental unpredictability and can maintain warmth toward students who are actively difficult. Opinion
  • You are content with a career where success is often invisible and delayed — you may never know the impact you had, and results rarely reflect effort in a linear way. Opinion

Warning signs

  • You need regular solitude to function well. Teaching offers almost none during school hours — you are always performing, supervising, or available. The staffroom is not quiet time. Opinion
  • You strongly dislike repetitive work. You will teach the same content to four parallel classes in one day and again next year. Curriculum changes slowly. Opinion
  • You struggle with tasks that have no clear endpoint. Marking and preparation are never truly finished — there is always more you could do, and perfectionism leads directly to burnout. Opinion
  • You expect your salary to reflect your hours and qualifications relative to other professions. Teachers with a four-year degree and five years experience earn less than equivalently qualified professionals in most private-sector fields, and the ceiling is visible from day one. Opinion
  • You have low tolerance for institutional bureaucracy. Curriculum changes, compliance reporting, and policy shifts imposed from above are constant and rarely optional. Autonomy exists within your classroom but not beyond it. Opinion
  • You take conflict or disrespect to heart. Students will be rude, parents will be aggressive, and you need to respond professionally regardless. Emotional resilience is not optional — it is the job. Opinion

Soft skills

  • Clear verbal communication adapted to adolescent audiences
  • Patience under sustained interpersonal pressure
  • Organisational stamina across competing concurrent deadlines
  • Collaborative planning with colleagues across faculties
  • Empathic boundary-setting with students and parents
  • Adaptability when lessons, technology, or student behaviour do not go to plan
  • Self-directed time management with minimal supervision

Technical skills

  • Curriculum design and lesson sequencing aligned to the Australian Curriculum or state syllabuses
  • Assessment design including rubric construction, moderation, and standards-based grading
  • Classroom management strategies and positive behaviour frameworks
  • Data literacy — interpreting NAPLAN, PAT, and internal assessment data to inform teaching
  • Digital platform proficiency (Google Classroom, Canvas, Microsoft Teams, school management systems)
  • Differentiation techniques for mixed-ability classes including students with learning plans
  • Subject-specific content expertise maintained at a level well above what is being taught

Demand, pay and the next twenty years

Current demand
Very high. Job advertisements for secondary teachers grew 511% between 2014 and 2024. Acute shortages in STEM, languages, and special education. NSW reported approximately 10,000 lessons per day without a qualified teacher in 2023.
Verified fact
Future demand
Strong growth expected. Skill Level 1 occupations (including teachers) are projected to grow 11.1% to May 2030. Population growth and ongoing attrition will sustain demand regardless of policy changes.
Forecast
Automation risk — entry
Low. AI tools will automate some marking of objective assessments and generate draft lesson resources, reducing preparation time. But face-to-face delivery, behaviour management, and welfare work cannot be automated. Entry-level teachers doing more routine content delivery are slightly more exposed to supplementation by adaptive learning platforms.
Opinion
Automation risk — senior
Very low. Senior teachers' value lies in mentoring, curriculum leadership, complex pastoral judgement, and institutional knowledge — none of which AI can replicate. Their roles are likely to expand as technology handles administrative tasks.
Opinion
Sector growth
Education sector employment is growing steadily, driven by population growth, rising school retention rates, and policy commitments to smaller class sizes. The sector added 6,400 secondary teaching positions annually in recent years.
Forecast
Competition
Low competition for applicants in shortage subjects (maths, physics, computing, languages) and regional areas. Moderate competition for English, humanities, and HPE in metropolitan schools. Overall the market strongly favours graduates.
Estimate
International mobility
Moderate. Australian teaching qualifications are well-regarded but registration does not transfer automatically. The UK, Canada (some provinces), and New Zealand have mutual recognition pathways. IB schools worldwide hire Australian-trained teachers. The US, Asia, and Middle East international school circuits are accessible but require additional credentialing.
Estimate
Regional opportunities
Excellent. Regional, rural, and remote schools have the most severe shortages and offer faster permanency, salary loadings, relocation packages, and subsidised housing. A graduate willing to spend two to three years in a regional posting will often secure permanent employment and accelerated career progression that metropolitan peers wait years for.
Estimate
Entry salary
$80,000–$92,000 depending on state (graduate step, base salary excluding super)
Verified fact
Median
$120,744 (median weekly earnings annualised, all secondary teachers)
Verified fact
Senior
$125,000–$130,000 (top of classroom teacher scale in most states, base salary)
Verified fact
Top of the field
$137,000–$143,000 (Highly Accomplished or Lead Teacher classification)
Verified fact
What changes over the next twenty years
  • AI will transform lesson preparation and routine assessment marking within five to ten years, reducing some administrative burden but not replacing classroom teachers. The core of the role — managing a room of adolescents, building relationships, adapting in real time — remains deeply human and resistant to automation. Forecast
  • Chronic teacher shortages are likely to persist through at least 2035, driven by population growth, high attrition (around 30-50% of graduates leave within five years), and an ageing workforce. This will maintain strong bargaining power for those who stay. Forecast
  • Salaries are likely to rise faster than historical norms as governments compete with the private sector for graduates. Several states have already implemented significant pay increases since 2022 and political pressure to continue is strong. Forecast
  • The role will increasingly require explicit mental health and wellbeing skills as schools absorb more welfare functions previously handled by families and community services. Teachers will be expected to identify and respond to complex student needs beyond academic instruction. Forecast
  • Flexible and hybrid teaching models may emerge for senior secondary students, with some content delivered via recorded or AI-tutored modules and teachers shifting toward facilitation, mentoring, and small-group intervention rather than whole-class lectures. Forecast
  • Demand will remain uneven across subject areas. STEM, computing, and languages teachers will be chronically undersupplied, while humanities and HPE will remain competitive. Graduates with dual-method combinations including a shortage subject will have the strongest career security. Forecast

Every route in

Tap a route to open it. The tag shows how commonly that route actually delivers the target role — not how hard the study is.

  1. Complete Year 12 with an ATAR. Most programs require a minimum in the range of 62 to 75, depending on institution and state. Estimate
  2. Apply through your state admissions centre (UAC in NSW/ACT, VTAC in VIC, QTAC in QLD, SATAC in SA/NT, TISC in WA). Choose one or two teaching specialisation areas aligned to the secondary curriculum — for example, mathematics, English, science, history, languages, or health and physical education. Verified fact
  3. Enrol and complete the four-year degree, which integrates discipline content, educational theory, and pedagogy. You will complete a minimum of 60 days of supervised professional experience placement in secondary schools, unpaid. Verified fact
  4. Pass the LANTITE (Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education). You must attempt it in your first year of study. From 2025 there is no cap on attempts, but you cannot graduate without passing. Verified fact
  5. Graduate and apply for provisional teacher registration with your state regulatory authority (e.g., NESA in NSW, VIT in VIC, QCT in QLD). You will also need a Working with Children Check and national criminal history check. Verified fact

  1. Hold (or complete) a bachelor's degree in any discipline. Your degree must include sufficient coursework in at least one secondary curriculum subject area — typically six or more units at second-year level or above for a first teaching area, and four for a second. Estimate
  2. Apply directly to the university offering the Master of Teaching (Secondary). No ATAR is required. Entry is based on your existing degree and its teaching-area content. Verified fact
  3. Complete the two-year Master of Teaching. This includes professional studies in pedagogy, curriculum, and assessment, plus supervised placements in secondary schools (typically 60 or more days). Verified fact
  4. Pass the LANTITE if you have not already done so during a previous ITE program. The same requirement applies: attempt in first year, must pass before graduation. Verified fact
  5. Graduate and apply for provisional registration with the regulatory authority in your intended state of practice. Verified fact

  1. Hold a bachelor's degree in a discipline other than education. Teach For Australia publishes a list of ineligible degrees (including social work and some others). Your degree must enable you to teach at least one in-demand secondary subject. Verified fact
  2. Apply to Teach For Australia's Leadership Development Program (applications reopen February 2027) or the Victorian government's Teach Today / Teach Tomorrow program. Both are highly competitive. Verified fact
  3. If accepted, you are placed as a paid teacher or paraprofessional in a partner secondary school. Teach For Australia places in low-SES communities; Victorian programs place in government schools. You do not choose your school. Verified fact
  4. Complete a Master of Teaching (Secondary) concurrently through a partner university (e.g., ACU, Deakin, or Federation University for the Victorian programs). Study is integrated around your school employment. Verified fact
  5. Pass LANTITE, graduate with the Master of Teaching, and apply for provisional registration. You finish with a postgraduate qualification plus two full years of classroom experience — a significant advantage over other graduates. Opinion

  1. Identify a university that accepts non-ATAR entry into its Bachelor of Education (Secondary). Common mechanisms include the Special Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT), enabling or tertiary preparation programs (typically one semester), portfolio-based entry, or recognition of work experience. Note: not all universities accept these for Education — the University of Sydney explicitly excludes Education from its mature-age scheme. Verified fact
  2. Complete the required entry pathway (e.g., sit the STAT, or complete a one-semester enabling program at the same university). Regional universities such as Charles Darwin, Federation, and CQUniversity tend to offer more accessible mature-age entry options. Estimate

The sequence that actually matters

The qualification varies wildly across people who reach this role. The sequence barely varies at all.

StageTypical ageWhat you are buyingHow people get stuck here
Initial Teacher Education (ITE study)18 to 22 (school leavers) or 25 to 40 (career changers)An accredited qualification that entitles you to apply for provisional registration. You also gain LANTITE pass, placement hours, and a teaching specialisation in one or two curriculum subjects.Failing LANTITE delays graduation — you cannot finish the degree without passing. Students who choose oversupplied teaching areas (e.g., PE, HASS) face brutal competition for jobs later. Career changers discover their bachelor's degree lacks sufficient content in any secondary curriculum subject and must complete bridging units, adding six to twelve months.
Provisional registration and first teaching position22 to 26Paid employment as a registered teacher. You begin building evidence toward proficient-level standards. This is where you prove you can manage a classroom, not just pass a course.Acute oversupply in HASS and PE subjects means graduates in those areas may wait months for a permanent position. STEM and special education graduates are snapped up immediately. Many first positions are in regional or remote schools, short-term contracts, or out-of-field assignments — teaching subjects you were not trained in. Graduates who cannot accept a regional posting or contract work can spend a year on casual relief lists.
Full registration (Proficient Teacher level)24 to 28Unrestricted registration recognised in every Australian state and territory via mutual recognition. Eligibility for ongoing (permanent) positions and higher salary increments. You can now move freely between government, Catholic, and independent sectors. You must compile a portfolio of evidence against the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers and have it assessed — typically by your principal or a panel. Teachers who move between schools, sectors, or states during their provisional period can find their evidence scattered or not recognised. Some schools provide structured support; others leave it entirely to the individual. Teachers who leave the classroom before achieving full registration (e.g., for parental leave) may find their provisional registration expires.
Experienced teacher or curriculum leadership28 to 40Access to leadership roles (Head of Department, Head of Year, curriculum coordinator). Salary progression to the top of the classroom teacher scale (typically $110,000 to $120,000 in most states). Eligibility for Highly Accomplished or Lead Teacher certification — though very few pursue it.Leadership positions are scarce in metropolitan schools and intensely competitive. Many experienced teachers hit a salary ceiling without moving into leadership. Workload and administrative burden cause high attrition — roughly 30 to 50 percent of teachers leave within their first five years. Those who stay but do not move into leadership can feel stagnant by their mid-thirties.

Pathways compared

Compare them on what they cost you, not just where they end. The last column matters most — it is where the pathway leaves you if the target role never arrives.

If you decide teaching is not for you partway through, the qualification has very limited value outside education.A Bachelor of Education is narrowly vocational. Partial completion leaves you with no qualification. Graduates who leave teaching typically pivot to corporate training, education policy, youth work, or community services — but often at lower pay and with perceived overqualification.

If it does not, you may need additional undergraduate units first.Discovering after enrolment that your prior degree content does not map cleanly to a secondary teaching area, forcing you to take bridging units or accept an out-of-field teaching assignment on graduation. You still hold your original bachelor's degree. If teaching does not work out, you return to your previous field with an additional master's qualification. The Master of Teaching also opens doors to education policy, curriculum design, and EdTech roles.

You do not choose your school or location. Placement schools are in low-SES communities with high-need student populations. The simultaneous workload of full-time teaching and postgraduate study is intense.Being placed in a challenging school environment with minimal prior classroom experience. Attrition is higher than in conventional pathways because the intensity is front-loaded — you are teaching full classes from week one without the gradual build-up of a standard placement.Excellent. You finish with a Master of Teaching plus two years of verified classroom experience. Graduates move into education policy, consulting, NGO leadership, school leadership, or continue teaching. The Teach For Australia alumni network is well-connected in policy and social enterprise.

Experience that runs alongside study

This matters more than marks. Every one of these is available before you graduate.

State education department graduate teacher recruitmentMarch to June in your final year of study for positions starting the following January. Victorian DET recruitment typically opens in March. NSW Department of Education posts positions from April. Set alerts early in your final year — rounds close quickly for in-demand subjects.

Each state education department runs annual recruitment rounds for permanent or temporary graduate teacher positions in government schools. NSW, VIC, and QLD are the largest employers. Positions are advertised by teaching area — STEM, special education, and languages graduates are recruited most aggressively. Regional and remote placements often have dedicated recruitment streams with incentives (housing subsidies, retention bonuses). Estimate

Victorian Teach the Future FellowshipsApplications opened in late 2025 for students commencing in 2026. If the program continues, expect applications to open around September to November in the year before you start your degree. You must be commencing a secondary B.Ed in Victoria.

200 fellowships for students commencing a secondary teaching undergraduate degree in 2026, focused on in-demand subject specialisms (mathematics, science, technologies, languages). Each fellowship provides $10,000 spread across the four-year degree plus mentoring and networking. Funded by the Victorian government to address secondary teacher shortages. Verified fact

Volunteer tutoring and mentoring programsYear-round intake at most organisations. Best to start in Year 2 of your degree so you have something meaningful to report by the time you apply for graduate positions in your final year. Commitments are typically 2 to 4 hours per week during school terms.

Organisations such as The Smith Family (Learning for Life), AIME Mentoring, and university-run homework centres place volunteers in schools to tutor and mentor students from disadvantaged backgrounds. This gives pre-service teachers real experience working with young people in a low-stakes setting and demonstrates commitment on graduate applications. Opinion

Student membership of subject teaching associationsJoin in Year 1 or 2 of your degree. Most associations run annual conferences in the middle of the year (June to August) — attend at least one before your final year to build your network.

Every state has subject-specific teacher associations (e.g., Mathematical Association of NSW, Science Teachers Association of Victoria, English Teachers Association). Student memberships are cheap or free and give access to conferences, journals, teaching resources, and networking with practising teachers. These connections often lead directly to job referrals on graduation. Opinion

Permission to Teach or casual relief teaching in final yearApply to your state regulatory authority (e.g., VIT, NESA) in the first semester of your final year. You typically need to have completed a minimum number of placement days and passed LANTITE before being eligible. Check your state's specific requirements — they vary.

In most states, final-year ITE students can apply for a limited authority or Permission to Teach, allowing them to work as a paid casual relief teacher (CRT) in schools before graduation. This provides income during study, builds classroom confidence, and creates relationships with schools that often convert to permanent offers on graduation. In Victoria this is integrated into the Teach Today program structure. Estimate

Postgraduate study

Usually a mid-career decision, not a next step. The honest question is whether it adds anything your first three jobs would not.

Master of Teaching (Secondary)2 years full-time

Essential if you already hold a bachelor's degree in another field and want to become a registered secondary teacher. This is the standard career-change pathway and is required for AITSL accreditation. Almost all secondary teachers who did not complete a 4-year undergraduate education degree enter the profession this way. Opinion

Cost $20,000–$36,000 total (Commonwealth Supported Place); $45,000–$65,000 full feeProviders University of Sydney, University of Melbourne, UNSW Sydney, Monash University, University of Queensland, Deakin University, University of Western Australia, Australian Catholic University, Western Sydney University, University of Newcastle
Graduate Diploma of Education (Secondary)1 year full-time

Faster than the Master of Teaching but being phased out at most institutions. Check that the specific course still holds AITSL accreditation before enrolling. Where still available, suits graduates who want the shortest possible path to registration. Opinion

Cost $12,000–$20,000 total (Commonwealth Supported Place)Providers Deakin University, University of Tasmania, Charles Darwin University
Master of Education1–2 years full-time or part-time equivalent

Not required for teacher registration and does not qualify you to teach if you are not already registered. Useful for experienced teachers seeking promotion to head of department, curriculum leadership or deputy principal roles. Rarely worth it in the first five years of teaching. Opinion

Doctor of Education (EdD) or PhD in Education3–4 years full-time

Rarely worthwhile for classroom teachers. Designed for those wanting to move into university-level educational research or senior policy roles. Does not increase classroom teaching salary under most enterprise agreements. Consider only if you genuinely want a research or academic career. Opinion

The gates

What actually stands between you and a place. Where a gate does not apply, that is stated rather than omitted — an absent requirement is decision-relevant information.

Admissions test
No pre-admission test required. There is no UCAT, GAMSAT or equivalent for teaching degrees. However, the LANTITE (Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education) must be attempted in your first year of the degree and passed before graduation. It is set at the top 30 per cent of the adult population in literacy and numeracy, administered by ACER, and from 2025 there is no limit on attempts.
Verified fact
Interview or portfolio
Not required at most universities. Some institutions require a written Teacher Suitability Statement (a short personal statement about motivation for teaching) at the point of application. This requirement is in flux nationally — Southern Cross University dropped it from 2026 citing updated accreditation standards, while ACU and others retain it or offer the CASPer online situational judgement test as an alternative. Check with your specific institution.
Verified fact
Subject prerequisites
Varies sharply by state and institution. In NSW, ACU lists no formal prerequisites for the Bachelor of Education (Secondary). In Victoria, English Units 3 and 4 (study score of at least 30 in EAL or 25 in other English) plus Mathematics Units 1 and 2 are prerequisites at ACU. In Queensland, English Units 3 and 4 (C grade) plus a Mathematics subject Units 3 and 4 (C grade) are required at ACU. Other universities set their own requirements — always verify directly with the institution and admissions centre for your state.
Verified fact
Assumed knowledge
In NSW, assumed knowledge for the ACU Bachelor of Education (Secondary) is a minimum of three Band 5 HSC results including one in English. Critically, assumed knowledge is not a prerequisite — you can be admitted without it and the degree is structured so you can meet the Band 5 standard within first year. Bridging and support units exist. Do not rule yourself out because of assumed knowledge you do not yet hold.
Verified fact
Registration to practise
Mandatory state-based teacher registration (not AHPRA). Each state has its own authority: NESA (NSW), VIT (VIC), QCT (QLD), Teachers Registration Board (SA, WA, TAS), TQI (ACT), TRBNT (NT). In NSW, provisional accreditation costs $100 per year and takes up to 20 business days to process. In VIC, initial registration is $175.60 (2026-27) and provisional registration lasts two years during which you must complete at least 80 days of teaching. A Working with Children Check is required in every state, and a national criminal history check is mandatory. You cannot teach without both registration and the WWCC.

Adjustment and access schemes

Points added to a raw rank. These are systematically under-claimed relative to eligibility — check every one.

Educational Access Scheme (EAS) — NSW/ACT via UAC

Covers 18 circumstances of educational disadvantage including financial hardship, illness, disability, home environment disruption, and school environment issues. Each university decides how many points to add — Macquarie University publishes up to 10 additional selection rank points. You apply through UAC separately from your main application. For 2026 Year 12 applicants, the EAS deadline is 19 November 2026. EAS can stack with subject adjustment points and elite athlete provisions. Verified fact

Special Entry Access Scheme (SEAS) — VIC via VTAC

Covers socio-economic disadvantage, educational disadvantage, disability, Indigenous identity, and mature-age entry. Victoria University publishes a cap of 20 adjustment points; other institutions set their own caps. Applications open 3 August 2026 and close 9 October 2026 for courses commencing 2027. You need supporting documentation — apply early to allow time to gather evidence. Verified fact

QTAC Adjustment Schemes — QLD

At QUT, available adjustments include: QTAC Educational Access Scheme (up to 10 ranks), Elite Sport Entry (up to 6), First Generation Adjustment (2), Priority School Adjustment (2 to 4), Regional and Remote Student Access (2), and Year 12 Subject Scheme (up to 8). The maximum total across all schemes is capped at 10 selection ranks. At UQ, up to five adjustment factors are available covering specific schools, subjects, rural location, financial hardship, and Indigenous identity. Verified fact

Universities Equity Scheme — SA/NT via SATAC

Automatically applied based on your school's remoteness, participation rate, mean ATAR, and Index of Community Socio-Educational Advantage. No separate application is required from the student. The specific point values are recalculated annually from school-level data and are not published as a flat number. A separate Universities Language, Literacy and Mathematics Scheme provides subject-based adjustments. Verified fact

Early entry

Offers made before results are released. Applications usually open around August and cost nothing.

UAC Schools Recommendation Scheme (SRS) — NSW/ACT

Eligible Year 12 students receive early offers based on Year 11 results and school recommendations, not ATAR. Teaching degrees at most NSW universities are included but coverage is institution-specific. For 2026: applications close 11 September 2026, course preferences locked by 5 November 2026, and offers released 12 November 2026 — well before ATAR results in December. You can receive one unconditional and/or conditional offers. Verified fact

University of Newcastle Early Entry Program

For NSW HSC or IB students at recognised participating schools. The Bachelor of Education (Secondary) is included. Assessment is based on RoSA results (four or more units including at least two units of English) or a completed VET Certificate III. Applications accepted from 8 April 2026; Round 1 offers (for applications received by 3 September) released 10 September 2026; Round 2 offers (applications by 24 September) released 1 October 2026. Verified fact

University of Canberra UC Early Offer Scheme

Applications open 27 March 2026 and close 9 August 2026. Assessed on Year 11 results plus a 300-word personal statement. Early offer documents due 23 August 2026; offers released 7 September 2026. This is well before ATARs are released and gives a guaranteed place if you meet the criteria. Verified fact

VTAC Early Offers — VIC

Victorian early offers operate primarily through individual institutions rather than a centralised scheme like SRS. VTAC applications for 2027 courses open 3 August 2026, with timely applications closing 28 September 2026. Following the Universities Accord recommendation, early offers nationally should not be issued before September. Check individual university websites for institution-specific early offer programs. Verified fact

Alternative and back-door entries

No rank closes most careers. It only changes the first two years.

Master of Teaching (Secondary) — graduate entry, no ATAR required

The standard career-change route. Complete any bachelor's degree (three years) with enough depth in at least one secondary curriculum area (e.g. history, science, mathematics, English), then enter a two-year Master of Teaching (Secondary). No ATAR applies at this stage — admission is based on your undergraduate GPA and content knowledge. Commonwealth Supported Places are available (indicative 2026 fee around $4,736 per year at some universities). Part-time study is possible at many institutions. This is the most common pathway for people who did not study education as undergraduates. Verified fact

Victorian employment-based teaching degrees — earn while you study

The Victorian Government funds postgraduate employment-based teaching degrees through Deakin, ACU and Federation University. You study for a minimum of 10 weeks, then commence employment as a paraprofessional in a school under Permission to Teach while completing your degree over 24 months. This means you are paid while studying, which addresses the financial barrier that stops many career changers. These programs are secondary-teaching specific and designed for people with relevant content knowledge in their bachelor's degree. Verified fact

TAFE diploma to education degree articulation

TAFE diplomas such as the Diploma of School Age Education and Care can provide entry into education degrees with up to one year of credit at some universities, bypassing the ATAR entirely. La Trobe University's Diploma of Teacher Education (Nexus) explicitly waives the ATAR requirement and offers direct progression into the Bachelor of Education. RMIT and Victoria University also have TAFE-to-education pathways. The exact credit granted depends on the specific articulation agreement between the TAFE and university. Estimate

Mature-age entry and the STAT test

If you are 21 or older and did not complete Year 12 (or completed it more than two years ago), most universities offer mature-age entry based on work experience, prior study, or the Special Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT). The STAT is a two-hour aptitude test that generates a selection rank without needing an ATAR. Combined with adjustment schemes, this provides a viable path for people returning to study later in life. Estimate

Transfer after one year of a related degree

If your ATAR falls short of a direct education entry, you can enrol in another degree at the same or a different university (arts, science, or any field aligned with a teaching area), achieve strong first-year results, and apply to transfer into the Bachelor of Education (Secondary). Internal transfers often require a credit average (around 65 per cent) in your first year. This path costs one year but also builds content knowledge in a teaching area, which is required regardless. Opinion

The best route into secondary teaching depends on your actual selection rank, which state you are applying in, whether you have the prerequisite subjects for that state, and whether you are entering straight from school or as a career changer — a personalised plan can map the specific pathway, adjustment schemes, and scholarship options that apply to your situation. Opinion

Subject selection — NSW (HSC)

Take these

  • English Advanced or English Standard — English is assumed knowledge for teaching degrees in NSW and a prerequisite in Victoria and Queensland. A Band 5 result (or equivalent) in English is expected regardless of your planned teaching area. English Advanced gives you more preparation if your teaching area is English or humanities. Verified fact
  • Mathematics Advanced or Mathematics Standard 2 — Mathematics is a hard prerequisite for Victorian and Queensland entry. Even in NSW where it is not a formal prerequisite, having a solid maths result keeps the door open if you later want to teach in a STEM area, which is in high demand. Standard 2 is sufficient for the prerequisite in most cases. Verified fact
  • At least two subjects in your intended teaching area — secondary teachers need depth in one or two curriculum areas (e.g. history, chemistry, physics, geography, legal studies, music). Your senior subject choices build the content knowledge that matters in your degree and career. Pick subjects you genuinely enjoy studying at depth, because you will teach them for decades. Opinion
  • A science subject if considering STEM teaching — physics, chemistry and biology teachers are in acute shortage. Studying one or two sciences at HSC level gives you a head start in the content-heavy units of a secondary education degree with a science major. Opinion

Think twice about

  • Studies of Religion or Community and Family Studies — students sometimes pick these thinking they are directly relevant to teaching. They are valid HSC subjects but do not serve as prerequisites or assumed knowledge for any education degree, and the content does not map to a secondary teaching area as strongly as a discipline like history, geography or science would. Opinion
  • Dropping all mathematics — in NSW, maths is not a formal prerequisite, so some students skip it entirely. This closes the door to Victorian and Queensland entry without bridging, and makes first-year numeracy (tested via the LANTITE) harder than it needs to be. Keep at least Standard 2. Opinion
  • Loading up on scaling subjects you dislike — teaching degrees typically have lower ATARs than medicine or law, so gaming the scaling system by choosing difficult subjects purely for ATAR points is less necessary. A strong Band 5 in three subjects you engage with is more useful than a mediocre result in a harder subject chosen for scaling alone. Opinion

Victorian Government Secondary Teaching ScholarshipUniversity

The Victorian Government operates a scholarship specifically for students in secondary teaching degrees, reflecting the state's teacher shortage priorities. Closing dates for 2026 had not been published at the time of research; applicants should check the Victorian Department of Education website. Historically these target high-need teaching areas such as mathematics, science, and languages. Estimate

University equity and accommodation scholarshipsEquity · Typically $2,000 to $10,000 per year

Most Australian universities offer equity scholarships for students experiencing financial disadvantage, first-in-family students, and students from regional or remote areas. These are far less contested than headline merit awards and are often the difference between being able to attend or not. Check your chosen university's scholarship portal — many require a separate application by November or December of Year 12. Estimate

General information only — not financial advice

The figures in this section are indicative estimates only and are general in nature. They are modelled from published rates and typical costs, and they take no account of your personal objectives, financial situation or needs.

They are not quotes, and they are not a projection of what you personally will pay or earn. Course fees, indexation rates, salaries and repayment thresholds all change.

Before you act on any of it, speak to a qualified financial adviser about your own circumstances, and confirm course costs and fees directly with the institution and your state admissions centre.

What these numbers assume

Graduate starting salary of $85,000, which is the approximate national average across state award scales for public school teachers in 2025. State figures range from $79,589 in Victoria to $92,215 in the Northern Territory. Estimate

Early-career salary growth of 4.5% per year reflects structured pay-scale increments from graduate teacher to proficient teacher over approximately 8 years. Estimate

Long-run growth of 2.5% per year reflects that most classroom teachers reach the top of their pay band within 8-10 years, after which growth tracks annual award increases only. Opinion

HELP repayment modelled at an effective rate of 4% of salary under the marginal repayment system introduced in July 2025. The actual rate depends on income and rises as salary increases. Estimate

Lifetime earnings assume 38 years of full-time work from graduation to retirement. Teachers who move into leadership roles (head teacher, assistant principal, principal) will earn significantly more. Opinion

HECS-HELP allows domestic students in Commonwealth-supported places to defer their entire student contribution. No upfront payment is required. Repayment begins through the tax system once income exceeds the threshold, currently $67,000 for 2025-26. Verified fact

SA-HELP allows deferral of the Student Services and Amenities Fee in the same way as tuition, so it does not require cash up front either. Verified fact

Under the marginal repayment system from 1 July 2025, repayments apply only to income above the threshold at 15 cents per dollar, not as a percentage of total income. A teacher on $85,000 repays approximately $2,700 per year. Verified fact

HELP debt indexation for 2026 is 2.8%, applied on 1 June each year to balances outstanding for more than 11 months. Verified fact

The Commonwealth Prac Payment provides $338.60 per week to eligible teaching students during mandatory professional placement, partially offsetting lost income during unpaid placement blocks. Verified fact

Youth Allowance and Austudy provide fortnightly income support for eligible full-time students, subject to means testing. ABSTUDY supports eligible Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students. Verified fact

Many universities offer teaching-specific scholarships, particularly for students willing to teach in shortage subject areas such as mathematics, science, and languages, or in regional and remote locations. Estimate

The verdict

Several ways of asking “which is best”, answered separately — because the best pathway depends entirely on what you are optimising for.

Best overall value for money

A four-year Bachelor of Education (Secondary) at a regional or outer-metropolitan university with high placement hours

Regional universities such as University of Newcastle, James Cook, CQUniversity, and Southern Cross offer lower living costs, accessible entry ranks (62-70), high placement hours (up to 1050 at CQU), and direct pipelines into schools with active shortages. Total student contribution is approximately $19,000 over four years in Band 1, and graduates in shortage subjects secure permanent positions almost immediately. Opinion

Which one is yours depends on which state you can study in · whether you can relocate to a regional area · your selection rank

Fastest path to a classroom

A two-year Master of Teaching (Secondary) for those who already hold a bachelor's degree

If you have a bachelor's degree with sufficient content in at least one secondary curriculum area, the Master of Teaching takes two years and costs approximately $9,500 total at a CSP. Providers like Deakin, Flinders, Macquarie and others offer this nationally. No ATAR is required. Graduates finish with a postgraduate qualification and the same registration eligibility as four-year BEd holders. Opinion

Which one is yours depends on whether your existing degree has enough content in a secondary teaching subject · whether you can study full-time or need part-time options

Strongest institutional reputation

A Go8 university's education program or double-degree combining a discipline degree with teaching

The University of Sydney, University of Melbourne, UQ and University of Adelaide offer secondary teaching degrees or double-degree structures where you study your teaching subject within the relevant faculty. Entry ranks are higher (estimated 75-85) but graduates emerge with genuine discipline depth and a brand recognised by selective schools and independent employers. Opinion

Which one is yours depends on your selection rank or undergraduate GPA · which Go8 campus is accessible to you · whether the higher entry threshold is achievable

Lowest out-of-pocket cost

An employment-based program such as Teach For Australia where you earn a salary while completing a Master of Teaching

Teach For Australia pays $63,000-$77,000 per year while you complete a Master of Teaching over two years, with minimal tuition costs. Victorian government employment-based programs operate similarly through Deakin, ACU and Federation University. You finish with a postgraduate qualification, two years of classroom experience, and no lost income — making the effective cost negative compared to full-time study. Verified fact

Which one is yours depends on whether you can secure one of the limited places · whether you hold a non-education bachelor's degree · willingness to be placed in a high-need school you do not choose

Best long-term return on investment

Any accredited pathway with a teaching specialisation in a chronic shortage subject — mathematics, physics, computing, or languages

Subject choice matters more than institution for long-term career security. STEM, computing, and languages teachers face acute shortages projected to persist through at least 2035. They secure permanent positions faster, qualify for targeted incentive payments, have stronger bargaining power for location preferences, and face virtually no unemployment risk regardless of which university they attended. Opinion

Which one is yours depends on whether your Year 12 subjects or prior degree support a STEM or languages specialisation · willingness to maintain deep content knowledge as curricula evolve

Best for high-achieving students

A Go8 double degree combining a full Bachelor of Arts or Science with a teaching qualification, or an embedded honours pathway

Programs like the University of Adelaide's Bachelor of Teaching (Secondary) with Bachelor of Arts, or UNSW's embedded honours BEd, produce graduates with genuine discipline expertise and a pathway to postgraduate research or education policy. These suit students with selection ranks above 80 who want optionality beyond the classroom. Opinion

Which one is yours depends on your selection rank · whether you want to keep research or policy options open · which discipline areas interest you at depth

Best for mature-age entrants without an ATAR

A Master of Teaching (Secondary) leveraging an existing bachelor's degree, bypassing ATAR entirely

If you already hold any bachelor's degree with content in a secondary teaching subject, the two-year Master of Teaching requires no ATAR and admits on undergraduate GPA and content relevance. If you have no degree, the STAT test or a one-semester enabling program provides entry to a four-year BEd at universities like CQUniversity, Federation, or Charles Darwin without needing Year 12 results. Opinion

Which one is yours depends on whether you hold an existing bachelor's degree · whether that degree contains enough content in a secondary teaching area · financial capacity to study for two to four years

Best for career changers from industry

Teach For Australia or a Master of Teaching with Commonwealth Teaching Scholarship support

Career changers from STEM, finance, law or other fields bring valuable content knowledge. Teach For Australia places you in a paid teaching role immediately while you study. Alternatively, a standard Master of Teaching with the Commonwealth Teaching Scholarship (up to $20,000 for postgraduates) and the Prac Payment ($338.60 per week during placement) significantly reduces the financial hit of retraining. Opinion

Which one is yours depends on whether your prior degree aligns with a secondary teaching subject · whether you meet Teach For Australia's eligibility criteria · your financial runway during study

Best if you need to study across state borders or online

A multi-campus provider like Australian Catholic University or a flexible-delivery program at Deakin or Southern Cross

ACU operates campuses in NSW, VIC, QLD and ACT, allowing mid-degree relocation. Deakin and Southern Cross offer secondary education degrees with significant online components and placement coordination across multiple regions. This flexibility matters because teacher registration is state-based — you register where you teach, not where you study — so you can study in one state and work in another. Opinion

Which one is yours depends on which states you may need to move between · whether you need online flexibility for work or family reasons · placement availability in your intended state of employment

Best for international teaching mobility

A Master of Teaching from a well-ranked university combined with IB-aligned subject expertise

Australian teaching qualifications are well-regarded internationally but do not transfer automatically. Graduates wanting international school careers (UK, Middle East, Asia, Europe) benefit from a recognised postgraduate qualification, teaching areas aligned to the International Baccalaureate (English, sciences, mathematics, languages), and two to three years of Australian experience. The UK and New Zealand have mutual recognition pathways for registered Australian teachers. Estimate

Which one is yours depends on which countries or school systems you want to access · whether you can complete two to three years of Australian teaching first · your subject specialisation areas

Choice of teaching specialisation areasBefore or during first year of your education degreeChoose at least one shortage subject (mathematics, physics, chemistry, computing, or a language other than English) as your primary or secondary teaching area, even if your passion is elsewhere. This gives you employment security for life.If your Year 12 background or existing degree does not support a STEM or languages specialisation, choose a humanities subject with a strong writing or data-analysis component (such as economics, geography, or legal studies) which are less oversupplied than history or HPE. Avoid combining two oversupplied subjects as your only teaching areas. Opinion
Whether to accept a regional or remote posting as your first positionFinal semester of study and first year of job applicationsAccept a regional posting for two to three years. You gain faster permanency, salary loadings of 10-20 per cent, subsidised housing in some jurisdictions, and accelerated progression that metropolitan peers wait years for.If personal circumstances prevent relocation, apply for casual relief teaching lists at multiple metropolitan schools simultaneously. Build relationships at three to four schools to accumulate enough days for a viable income while waiting for contract or permanent positions. Register with both government and Catholic sectors to double your pool. Estimate
Government, Catholic, or Independent sector for first employmentWhen applying for positions in final year of studyApply to the government sector first in most states — it is the largest employer, offers transparent salary scales, and permanency (once secured) is genuine. Catholic systemic schools are a strong alternative with similar conditions. If government and Catholic sectors have no vacancies in your area and subject, apply to independent schools. Be aware that contracts rather than permanency are common, co-curricular expectations are higher, and salary can vary significantly between schools. Read the specific school's enterprise agreement before signing. Opinion
Whether to pursue Highly Accomplished or Lead Teacher certification versus moving into leadershipFive to eight years into your career, once full registration is well establishedIf you want to stay in the classroom, pursue HALT certification — it provides a salary increase to $137,000-$143,000 without taking on a management role. The evidence process is demanding but the outcome keeps you teaching. If HALT certification is not accessible in your school (some principals do not support the process, or your school lacks the structures for evidence collection), pivot toward a formal Head of Department or Year Coordinator role. These typically carry allowances of $5,000-$15,000 on top of your base salary and are more widely available. Estimate
Whether to complete a Graduate Diploma (1 year) or full Master of Teaching (2 years)When choosing a postgraduate pathway as a career changerComplete the two-year Master of Teaching. It is nationally recognised, AITSL-accredited in every state, and provides the strongest foundation for registration anywhere in Australia. If financial or personal constraints make two years impossible, confirm with the regulatory authority in your intended state of practice that a specific Graduate Diploma is recognised before enrolling. The SCU Graduate Diploma is not recognised by NESA in NSW, and Curtin's WA accreditation expires June 2027. If your state does not recognise it, you will need to articulate into a Master of Teaching anyway, negating any time saving. Verified fact

If the whole pathway closes

If you do not receive an offer into a Bachelor of Education due to a low selection rank, enrol in a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science at the same university with subjects aligned to a teaching area. Achieve a credit average in first year and apply to transfer internally, or complete the three-year degree and enter a Master of Teaching. Both paths lead to the same registration outcome. Opinion

If you complete your degree but cannot secure a permanent or contract position in your area, register for casual relief teaching across government, Catholic, and independent sectors simultaneously. Work across multiple schools to build relationships and visibility. Regional schools advertising mid-year will often fast-track casual teachers they know into contracts. Opinion

If you discover during your degree or placements that classroom teaching is not for you, your qualification is not wasted. A Bachelor of Education or Master of Teaching provides entry to education policy roles in state departments, corporate training and learning design, EdTech companies, youth work, community services coordination, and curriculum development for publishers. These roles typically require teaching registration as a baseline. Opinion

If you fail LANTITE multiple times, access the free preparation resources at teacheredtest.acer.edu.au and consider a short literacy and numeracy bridging course through your university. From 2025 there is no cap on attempts, so persistence is viable. The test is set at the top 30 per cent of the adult population — if you are struggling, it indicates a genuine skill gap worth addressing regardless of your teaching career. Verified fact

If your intended teaching area becomes more oversupplied during your degree (e.g., a policy change floods the market), pivot by adding units in a shortage subject as a second teaching method. Most education degrees allow you to change or add a specialisation up to the start of third year without extending your course length. Opinion

Mistakes to avoid

The most common

  • Choosing Health and Physical Education or creative arts as your only teaching specialisation in a metropolitan area. These subjects are oversupplied and graduates can spend months or years on casual relief lists while STEM and languages graduates receive multiple offers before graduation. Opinion
  • Failing to attempt LANTITE early in first year. From 2025 there is no limit on attempts, but students who delay their first sitting create unnecessary pressure in later years and risk not passing before graduation deadlines. Verified fact
  • Treating professional experience placements as something to survive rather than a job interview. Most first teaching positions come through placement connections. A passive or disengaged placement squanders the best employment opportunity you will have as a graduate. Opinion
  • Not applying for the Commonwealth Prac Payment during placement blocks. This provides $338.60 per week during your unpaid placement and exists specifically because placement is a major financial barrier. Many students do not realise they are eligible or miss application deadlines. Verified fact

And the less obvious

  • Enrolling in a Graduate Diploma of Education without verifying it is recognised in the state where you intend to teach. The SCU Graduate Diploma is explicitly not recognised by NESA in NSW, and the Curtin program's WA accreditation expires mid-2027. Completing a qualification that does not lead to registration in your state wastes a year and forces you into a Master of Teaching anyway — making the total pathway three years, not one. Verified fact
  • Combining two humanities teaching areas (e.g., history and English, or geography and legal studies) without a shortage subject as a backup. This feels safe because you enjoy both, but it places you in the most competitive segment of the graduate market. Adding even a minor method in mathematics or a science transforms your employability overnight. Opinion
  • Letting provisional registration expire by failing to complete sufficient teaching days within the provisional period. Teachers who take extended leave, move interstate, or cannot secure consistent work can find their registration lapsing — requiring them to re-enter the profession through a more complex pathway with additional evidence requirements.
