What it actually takes to become a Radiographer in Australia
Median $122,720 a year. Four ways in, taught at 7 Australian institutions — what each route costs and what the work is really like.
What the job actually is
A radiographer does not just press a button on an X-ray machine. Diagnostic radiographers produce the images doctors use to diagnose, using X-ray, CT, MRI, fluoroscopy and mobile imaging in wards and theatres. They position patients who are often in pain, set exposures safely, judge whether an image is good enough and spot urgent findings. It is technical, physical and patient-facing all at once. Opinion

A week, not a day
There is no typical day. There is a typical week, and it is uneven by design.
| Block | Roughly | What it looks like |
|---|---|---|
| Imaging patients | 60% | Positioning, scanning and checking images. |
| Patient care | 15% | Explaining procedures and moving patients safely. |
| Quality and safety checks | 10% | Radiation safety and equipment checks. |
| Records and communication | 10% | Documentation and liaising with radiologists. |
| Training | 5% | Keeping up with new equipment and techniques. |

The sequence that actually matters
The qualification varies wildly across people who reach this role. The sequence barely varies at all.
| Stage | Typical age | What you are buying | How people get stuck here |
|---|---|---|---|
| Accredited degree | 18 to 22 | Eligibility for registration | Choosing nuclear medicine or radiation therapy by mistake; they are different jobs. |
| Clinical placements | 19 to 22 | Long hospital placements | Underestimating placement hours. |
| Supervised practice | 22 to 23 | Full registration | Taking a role without good supervision. |
| Specialisation | 24 and over | CT, MRI or interventional skills | Staying in general X-ray only. |
Pathways compared
Compare them on what they cost you, not just where they end. The last column matters most — it is where the pathway leaves you if the target role never arrives.
| Pathway | Live example | Years | Study cost | Difficulty | Biggest risk | If it doesn’t work out |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Year 12 to bachelor degree | The usual route Estimate | 3.5 to 4 years Estimate | About $39,500 at 2027 rates, deferrable Estimate | Science-heavy | Long unpaid placements | Imaging sales, research, further study |
| Science degree then master's | Less common Estimate | 5 years Estimate | Higher, often full-fee Estimate | Moderate | Full fees | A science degree already completed |

7 diagnostic imaging degrees on the register
The table below is built from the CRICOS register, not from memory. Verified fact
How to read this table
Institution names, course names, campuses, durations and work hours are copied from the CRICOS register. Verified fact
CRICOS lists courses open to international students, so a domestic-only course will not appear here even if it is well established. Opinion
The University of Newcastle and RMIT list nuclear medicine and radiation therapy degrees in this field; those lead to different jobs and are left out. Opinion
0 of 7 institutions carry a real, dated selection rank from UAC or TISC. Ranks published for a different course or an unidentifiable campus were not reused; the rest read not verified. Opinion
Admissions centres also list these courses that are not in this field of the register: Curtin University, Bachelor of Science (Medical Radiation Science) in Medical Imaging, TISC minimum 90.00 and lowest offered 91.00. Verified fact

General information only — not financial advice
The figures in this section are indicative estimates only and are general in nature. They are modelled from published rates and typical costs, and they take no account of your personal objectives, financial situation or needs.
They are not quotes, and they are not a projection of what you personally will pay or earn. Course fees, indexation rates, salaries and repayment thresholds all change.
Before you act on any of it, speak to a qualified financial adviser about your own circumstances, and confirm course costs and fees directly with the institution and your state admissions centre.
What it actually costs
Set your own situation. Everything updates live, and every figure is calculated in your browser from the assumptions listed below — none of it is a number quoted at you.
Every line, three ways
Minimum, average and premium. The deferrable column is the one most people misread — a deferred cost is repaid through the tax system, not paid up front.
| Cost | Minimum | Average | Premium | Deferrable |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Student contribution (tuition) Allied health is capped at $9,880 per full-time year in 2027. Four years in every column. Verified fact | $39,520 | $39,520 | $39,520 | Yes |
| Student services and amenities fee Capped at $386 a year for full-time students in 2027 and deferrable through SA-HELP. Verified fact | $1,544 | $1,544 | $1,544 | Yes |
| Uniform, dosimeter and checks Uniform, immunisations and checks. Estimate | $150 | $250 | $400 | No |
| Laptop and technology A standard laptop is enough. Estimate | $900 | $1,200 | $2,000 | No |
| Textbooks Anatomy and imaging texts. Estimate | $900 | $1,600 | $2,500 | No |
| Placement travel Travel and accommodation for rural placements. Estimate | $500 | $1,500 | $4,000 | No |
| Living costs while studying Zero if living at home for the whole degree; the average column assumes moving out for about two years, the premium column for all 4. Estimate | $0 | $30,000 | $88,000 | No |
Return and assumptions
What these numbers assume
A graduate starting salary of $76,000, in line with public hospital graduate rates. Estimate
Compulsory HELP repayments start at $69,528 of repayment income in 2026-27, at 15 cents per dollar above that threshold, so early repayments are a small share of salary. Verified fact
Lifetime earnings assume long-run pay growth of 2.5 per cent a year over 40 years. A projection, not a promise. Forecast
Tuition and the amenities fee can be deferred through HECS-HELP and SA-HELP and repaid through the tax system once income passes the threshold. Verified fact
Long unpaid placements make savings important in the later years. Estimate
Mid-priced to study, steady pay afterwards
Fees are moderate; placement hours are the hidden cost. Opinion

Decision points and contingencies
The last column is the useful one. A plan with no fallback is a wish.

|---|---|---|---|
| University offer round | December to January of Year 12 | An accredited imaging degree | Start in health science and transfer, or plan a graduate-entry master's. Estimate |
| Placements | During the degree | A mix of hospital and private imaging | Ask for emergency and theatre experience. Estimate |
| First job | Final year | A supported first-year role | Rural hospitals often hire graduates quickly. Estimate |
| Specialisation | Two to five years in | CT or MRI | General radiography remains a solid long-term career. Estimate |
