What the job actually is

Mechanical engineers do not mainly fix engines. They design, analyse and maintain anything that moves or handles heat and energy: pumps, air-conditioning systems, mining equipment, manufacturing lines, vehicles and medical devices. In Australia a large share of jobs are in mining, energy, building services and defence rather than car or product design, which is where most students imagine themselves. Opinion

Mining and resources

Maintaining and improving fixed plant, mobile equipment and processing systems, often on fly-in fly-out rosters in WA and Queensland. Estimate

Building services consultancies

Designing heating, ventilation and air-conditioning, fire and hydraulic systems for buildings. Estimate

Manufacturing and defence

Designing and improving products and production lines, including shipbuilding and defence projects. Estimate

Energy and utilities

Power generation, renewable energy and gas infrastructure. Estimate

Specialties

Building services (HVAC)

Air-conditioning, ventilation and fire systems; a large employer of graduates. Estimate

Asset and maintenance engineering

Keeping plant and equipment running reliably, especially in mining. Estimate

Design and product development

Computer-aided design and analysis of components and products. Estimate

Mechatronics and automation

Combining mechanical, electrical and software systems, including robotics. Estimate

Energy and thermal systems

Power plants, renewable energy and heat transfer. Estimate

About these figures

Jobs and Skills Australia groups mechanical engineers with industrial and production engineers, so these figures cover all three. Verified fact

Registration is a state matter

Queensland requires registration to provide professional engineering services in or for the state. Verified fact

What this means for a student

In Queensland an engineer must be registered, or supervised by a registered engineer, to provide professional engineering services; registration needs a qualification, experience and demonstrated competence. Verified fact

Victoria runs a similar scheme that covers mechanical engineering. Keep a record of your experience from your first job, because registration and Chartered status both depend on it. Estimate

Every route in

Tap a route to open it. The tag shows how commonly that route actually delivers the target role — not how hard the study is.

The sequence that actually matters

The qualification varies wildly across people who reach this role. The sequence barely varies at all.

Compare them on what they cost you, not just where they end. The last column matters most — it is where the pathway leaves you if the target role never arrives.

How to read this table

Institution names, course names, campuses, durations and work hours are copied from the CRICOS register. Verified fact

CRICOS lists courses open to international students, so a domestic-only course will not appear here even if it is well established. Opinion

Several large universities register a general Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) in which mechanical is a major, so the course name does not mention mechanical. Named mechanical degrees are marked as specialist. Opinion

Associate degrees and three-year science degrees on this list lead to associate or technologist roles, not straight to professional engineer. Estimate

General information only — not financial advice

The figures in this section are indicative estimates only and are general in nature. They are modelled from published rates and typical costs, and they take no account of your personal objectives, financial situation or needs.

They are not quotes, and they are not a projection of what you personally will pay or earn. Course fees, indexation rates, salaries and repayment thresholds all change.

Before you act on any of it, speak to a qualified financial adviser about your own circumstances, and confirm course costs and fees directly with the institution and your state admissions centre.
