What it actually takes to become a Business Analyst in Australia
Median $127,088 a year. Seven ways in, taught at 42 Australian institutions — what each route costs and what the work is really like.
What the job actually is
There is no single Australian occupation called business analyst, and that is not a pedantic point. The work is split across two ANZSCO groups: 2247 Management and Organisation Analysts, which covered 105,800 employed people in the February 2026 reference period, and 2611 ICT Business and Systems Analysts, which covered 51,000. Inside 2611, 20,300 people are classified as ICT Business Analysts. Inside 2247 the closest match is Organisation and Methods Analysts at 9,500 people, while the remaining 64,900 of that group are management consultants. The job itself is the work of deciding what should be built or changed before anyone builds it: eliciting what the business actually needs from the people who use a process and the people who pay for the change, writing that down as requirements, and handing the definition to a delivery team. That is why the title appears under both a business classification and an ICT one. Verified fact
Management consulting and professional services firms
The single biggest concentration of this work. Professional, scientific and technical services is the largest employing industry for ANZSCO 2247, and it is also where the largest share of business analyst titles sit. Here the analyst is embedded in a client engagement, often on a fixed-term project, and the deliverables are things like a process redesign, a requirements pack or a business case. The work is front-of-house: you are in the client's building, in front of people who did not ask for the project. Verified fact
Banks, insurers and financial services
The second largest employing industry for 2247, and the one where the analyst is most often called an ICT business analyst. Regulatory change, core system replacement and risk work generate a steady stream of requirements. The expectations are different from consulting: documentation is audited, timelines are fixed, and the analyst has to work inside a delivery team that already exists. Verified fact
Government and public administration
Public administration and safety is the third largest employing industry for 2247. Government digital and service-delivery work is where Australian agile practice is most visible, and where a business analyst is often the person who translates a policy or a ministerial commitment into a service specification and a backlog. Verified fact
In-house corporate and shared services
Large employers in retail, utilities, mining, health and higher education all employ business analysts directly, usually in a team of three to eight reporting to a product owner or a delivery manager. This is the most stable version of the job: the work repeats, the domain knowledge compounds, and the analyst is the person who remembers why a rule exists. Estimate
Specialties
Requirements and systems analysis
The core of the job and the one common to every setting: turning a stated business need into a written, testable specification. This is the part of the work that lives closest to the technical side of an organisation, and the part where a systems analyst and a business analyst overlap most. Estimate
Agile delivery analysis
Working inside a Scrum or Kanban team, writing user stories and acceptance criteria, and sitting in backlog refinement. The IIBA sells a separate agile analysis certification, which is a reasonable signal of how much of the profession now works this way. Verified fact
Business data analytics
The overlap zone with data analysis: using data to size a problem, test an assumption or measure whether a change worked. The IIBA offers a business data analytics certification of its own, which tells you the profession has already drawn a line around this specialisation rather than treating it as interchangeable with data analysis. Verified fact
Process and operations analysis
Mapping how work actually gets done rather than how the policy says it should, then redesigning it. This is the specialisation that maps to the Organisation and Methods Analysts sub-occupation inside ANZSCO 2247, and it is the closest thing in the official statistics to a pure business analyst. Verified fact
Product analysis and product ownership support
Deciding what a product should do and in what order, and holding the line on scope. The product owner is a distinct role, but in Australian teams the business analyst is often the person who does the analysis that the product owner then owns. Estimate
Management consulting
The 64,900 management consultants inside ANZSCO 2247 are a large adjacent market rather than a sub-discipline of business analysis, but they are hired for the same underlying skill: diagnosing an organisation and arguing for a change in terms its own executives accept. Verified fact
A week, not a day
There is no typical day. There is a typical week, and it is uneven by design.
| Block | Roughly | What it looks like |
|---|---|---|
| Stakeholder conversations, interviews and workshops | 30% | Sitting with the people who use the process, the people who manage it and the people who fund it, and finding out what is actually broken. This is the part of the job that cannot be done from a brief. |
| Writing requirements, user stories and acceptance criteria | 25% | Turning what was said into something a delivery team can build against, and something a tester can check. The writing is slow, and it is the part most often shortened when a deadline bites. |
| Backlog refinement, planning and delivery-team work | 15% | Inside the delivery rhythm: refining stories, clarifying scope, reviewing what was built, and being the person who answers the team's questions about why. |
| Process mapping and analysis | 10% | Drawing how the work flows now, finding the duplication and the handoffs, and testing a proposed design against the volume of work it would actually carry. |
| Data, reporting and business cases | 10% | Sizing the problem, modelling the benefit, and measuring whether the change delivered. A business analyst who cannot read a dataset or argue from a number is limited to restating what other people already believe. |
| Meetings, administration and keeping the toolchain current | 10% | The residual. Status reporting, document control, keeping the backlog and the wiki in a state somebody else can pick up. |
Is it right for you?
An honest self-test. The filter is rarely passion — everyone has that.
Strong signs of fit
- You can hold two versions of the truth at once without treating either as a nuisance: what the business says it wants, and what the process and the data actually show. Opinion
- You are the person in the room who writes down what was agreed, and you are trusted to have written it down accurately. Opinion
- You can explain the same requirement to a director, a team leader and an engineer without changing its meaning, and without padding it for the director. Opinion
- You would rather find the hidden assumption than win the argument. Opinion
Warning signs
- You want to build the thing. If the pull of this career is the code, the system, the model or the dashboard, then you want software engineering or data analysis instead, and this job will frustrate you for years. Opinion
- You want the answer handed to you. Most of the work is deciding what the question is, and the reward for doing that well is invisible. Opinion
- You are hoping for a ticket, a badge or a registration that will make employers take you seriously. There is none for this role in Australia, and no employer hires on the strength of one. Opinion
- You dislike ambiguity and ambiguity is the material. A requirement is not a specification; a specification is a negotiation. Opinion
Soft skills
- Stakeholder management across business and technical audiences
- Requirements elicitation by interview, workshop and observation
- Writing user stories and acceptance criteria that a team can build against
- Process mapping and reading a business process diagram critically
- Business cases, cost-benefit reasoning and benefits realisation
- Facilitating workshops and defending a prioritisation decision
- Plain, precise written English, and knowing when a document is finished
- Negotiating scope without creating a fight
Technical skills
- Business process modelling in BPMN or an equivalent notation
- Collaborative delivery tooling such as Jira, Confluence, Azure DevOps or Miro
- SQL for pulling your own numbers out of an operational system
- Spreadsheets and data pivoting in Excel, and reading a Power BI or Tableau dashboard critically
- Wireframing a user interface in Figma, Balsamiq or similar
- Systems thinking: seeing the same process from four different users' points of view
- Delivery methods, and knowing when a team is doing agile badly rather than not doing agile
- The shape of a software delivery team, and where a business analyst sits in it
Demand, pay and the next twenty years
What changes over the next twenty years
- The title will survive, the content will not. Turning a business need into a written specification is work an organisation still needs when the software is written by people who were not in the room. Forecast
- Documentation will be the first casualty. Writing up what was already decided is the part of the job most exposed to automated drafting, and that share of the week will keep growing across every seniority level. Forecast
- Being able to interrogate data will become a baseline expectation rather than a differentiator. The professional body already sells a separate business data analytics certification, which is a reasonable signal of how the market is splitting the skill. Forecast
- Compliance and audit will create more demand than automation removes. Financial and public-sector organisations have to evidence how a decision was made, and that evidence is documentation work, done by someone who understands the process. Forecast
- The title will stay ambiguous unless the statistical classification catches up, so the interview will remain the only reliable way for a candidate to tell which of three jobs is being offered. Forecast
The title problem, and where the work actually sits
Australia has no occupation called business analyst, so the work is counted in two places and the job ads do not agree with each other. Start with the size of the population. Verified fact
The group called 2247 Management and Organisation Analysts covered 105,800 employed people in the February 2026 reference period. Its median age is 43, 17 per cent work part-time, 48 per cent are women, and 83 per cent work full-time hours averaging 43 a week. The age distribution is the part worth dwelling on: 5 per cent of the workforce is aged 15 to 24, while 20.6 per cent is 55 or older. This is not a career you walk into at twenty-two and stay in until you retire, and the graduate entry point is a small slice of it. Verified fact
Inside those 105,800, 64,900 are management consultants and 9,500 are classified as Organisation and Methods Analysts. That second figure is the closest official match to a business analyst who does not write code, and it is small enough that no Australian statistic counts business analysts directly. The other half of the market is in 2611 ICT Business and Systems Analysts, 51,000 people, of whom 20,300 are ICT Business Analysts and 14,100 are Systems Analysts. That group is younger, works fewer hours and earns more: a median of $2,697 a week against $2,444, a median age of 36 against 43, and 29.3 per cent holding a postgraduate qualification against 33.1 per cent. Verified fact
The practical consequence for a student is that the title on an advert tells you almost nothing. A business analyst title in a bank is usually a 2611 role that will want SQL and some data modelling. The same title in a consulting firm is usually a 2247 role that may never open a database. Read the reporting line, the deliverables and the tools, not the title. Estimate
Three jobs, one title
A business analyst defines what should be built or changed, writes the requirements and manages the stakeholders. A data analyst interrogates data, builds the model and explains the numbers. A systems analyst specifies and designs how a system works, and often writes the code. In Australian job ads the three overlap constantly, and the reliable tell is which side of the requirement-to-code boundary the role sits on. Estimate
A week in the job
No organisation publishes a standard week for a business analyst, so the split below is a reasoned reconstruction from how the professional frameworks describe the work. Treat it as a shape, not a measurement. Estimate
The thing that surprises people is how much of the job is listening and how little is analysing spreadsheets. Roughly a third of the week is conversations: interviewing a branch manager about a process they have never been asked to describe, sitting in a workshop where four people disagree about what the current system does, or asking the obvious question nobody asked and watching the room go quiet. The analysis follows from that, not the other way round. Estimate
The second surprise is that the writing is the deliverable. A business analyst's output is a document that other people will act on: a requirements pack, a set of user stories with acceptance criteria, a process map, a business case. The judgement is in the writing, because a requirement that is three sentences long and testable is a different artefact from one that is a paragraph of adjectives. If you do not enjoy writing, this job is harder than the job title suggests. Estimate
What the job is not is the thing it is often confused with. A software engineer spends most of the week reading, modifying and debugging code other people wrote and explaining what they did in meetings, pull requests and documentation. The business analyst is upstream of all of that. The business analyst does not write the code, does not build the model, and does not make the strategic call. What the business analyst does is make sure the thing that gets built is the thing that was needed. Estimate

Deciding what a product should do and in what order, and holding the line on scope. The product owner is a separate role, but in Australian teams the business analyst is usually the person who does the analysis the product owner then owns. Estimate
Management consulting
The 64,900 management consultants inside ANZSCO 2247 are an adjacent market rather than a sub-discipline of business analysis, but they are hired for the same underlying skill: diagnosing an organisation and arguing for a change in terms its own executives accept. Verified fact
Demand, earnings and what the shortage list actually says
The occupation is growing, and it is not on the shortage list. Both of those are true at the same time, and the second one is the more useful fact for a student planning a five-year investment. Verified fact
Management and Organisation Analysts numbered 109,600 in November 2025, up 10.7 per cent over the preceding three years, and the sector projection is for a further 16.2 per cent growth to May 2030 and 10.8 per cent to May 2035. The median weekly earnings band for the occupation is the fourth of five, and the unemployment rate is average rather than tight. Then, in the 2026 Occupation Shortage List published in October 2026, both ANZSCO 2247 and ANZSCO 2611 are recorded as no shortage. Business analysis is a growing occupation in which employers are not, at the national level, telling each other they cannot find people. Verified fact
That combination is worth more to a student than a shortage listing would be. It means the demand is real and the competition is real too, and it means the differentiator is what you can demonstrate rather than what you hold. A shortage listing would not help you anyway, because there is nothing to be shortlisted for: the qualification carries no licence, no registration and no protected title. The interview and the portfolio are the filter. Estimate
On earnings the two authoritative sources disagree, and the gap is instructive. The occupation profile puts median weekly earnings for full-time workers in 2247 at $2,444, which is about $127,000 a year, and Indeed's average base salary for a business analyst is $104,270 a year from 1,100 reported salaries. The gap is not an error: the occupation profile counts full-time workers including senior staff and managers, while the Indeed figure is what employers actually advertise and what people actually report, and it is a mean rather than a median. For a graduate, the bottom of the Indeed range, $73,918, is the realistic starting point, and the panel on cost and return uses that figure. Verified fact
Indeed's own page also shows where the money is: the average business analyst salary was highest in Canberra at $145,033, then Melbourne at $124,325, Parramatta at $120,943, Sydney at $109,775 and Brisbane at $107,100. A senior business analyst averaged $133,938. Those are advertised and self-reported figures, not audited ones, so treat them as a shape rather than a number, but the ordering matches the industry data: this is a capital-city profession. Verified fact
Software engineering and business analysis share an industry, not a job
Both occupations sit in Australian technology hiring, both are affected by the same downturn in entry-level technology hiring, and both are frequently advertised by the same recruiters. The difference is what you produce. A software engineer produces working code and owns its maintenance. A business analyst produces a definition of what should be built and owns the quality of the conversation that produced it. If you are choosing between them, choose on which of those two artefacts you would rather be responsible for, not on which one is harder to get into. Estimate
Every route in
Tap a route to open it. The tag shows how commonly that route actually delivers the target role — not how hard the study is.
- Apply for a three-year business degree. In the Commonwealth register of courses for the September 2026 snapshot, 108 providers offer 482 courses in the field of education 0803 Business and Management, and there is no narrower code in the national classification for business analysis or analytics. Verified fact
- Pick the major that makes the analysis obvious: accounting, economics, finance, operations, marketing analytics or management. The title on the certificate is what a recruiter sees, but the major is what you will be interviewed on. Estimate
- Do a placement if the degree has one. The register records work hours for a large share of business degrees, including 175 hours at the Australian Catholic University and 165 at Deakin University. Verified fact
- Graduate and apply for a graduate business analyst, analyst or process analyst role. There is no registration to complete, no exam to sit and no professional body whose membership you must hold. Estimate
- Know what you are buying. There is no Bachelor of Business Analysis anywhere in the register. The closest course titles are a Bachelor of Business Analytics at the University of Wollongong, the University of Newcastle, Flinders University, Deakin University, Swinburne University, Edith Cowan University and Western Sydney University, and a Bachelor of Decision Analytics at Top Education Group. Verified fact
- Check the field of education before you compare fees, because the same job title sits in two different student contribution bands. The Wollongong, Newcastle, Western Sydney and Flinders analytics degrees are classified under Business and Management, while the Deakin and Swinburne analytics degrees are classified under Information Systems, which is a different band with a different contribution amount. Verified fact
- Expect more statistics and less accounting than a general business degree. That is the whole point of it, and it is also the part that makes some people drop out. Estimate
- Graduate into a data-flavoured analyst role and decide afterwards whether you want the business side or the data side. Both are legitimate business analyst careers and they pay differently. Estimate
- This is the route that leads to the other half of the market. The 2611 ICT Business and Systems Analysts group covers 51,000 people, with a median of $2,697 a week against $2,444 in the business-side group, and 29.3 per cent of them hold a postgraduate qualification. Verified fact
- You will learn more about systems than about business, and you will have to fix that deliberately. Most employers hiring a business analyst want someone who can interrogate a business process, not someone who can configure an enterprise resource planning system. Estimate
- Pick a course with a large work component if you can. The register records 450 hours of work for the Federation University Bachelor of Information Technology (Business Information Systems). Verified fact
- Graduate into a systems analyst or ICT business analyst role, and move towards requirements if that is the part you enjoy. Estimate
- Start from the degree you actually want to do, and get into a role where you have to look at how something works. The title can arrive later; the experience cannot. Estimate
- Most Australian business analysts did not begin as business analysts, because most of them did not study business. They started in an operations role, a bank graduate program, a government analyst position, a consulting job or a retail management trainee role, and the title arrived once there was enough evidence behind them. Estimate
- Move sideways into the analyst title once you can point at something you defined, wrote down, or sized with data. An operations analyst who rebuilt a rostering process and measured the saving is more employable than a graduate with a business degree and no evidence. Estimate
- Watch the age profile. Only 5 per cent of the ANZSCO 2247 workforce is aged 15 to 24 and 20.6 per cent is 55 or older, so this is a career people walk into late as well as early. Verified fact
- Start with a certificate or diploma in business at a TAFE, which is the route with no selection rank at all, or with a two-year associate degree: the register lists one in business at the University of the Sunshine Coast, among others. Confirm in writing how much credit carries into the bachelor degree before you enrol. Verified fact
- Do the certificate well, because the articulation is not automatic. Credit is usually conditional on passing every subject, and a failed subject turns a two-year credit into a repeat year. Estimate
- Articulate into the second or third year of a business degree and finish with a bachelor's, or stop after the certificate and go into an operations or administration role. Estimate
- Enter the market with the degree and two years of practical exposure to how a business actually runs, which a straight-through school leaver does not have. Estimate
- This is the route for people who already have a wage and a career. The register shows private and external providers delivering business degrees with campuses in several states at once, and universities running business degrees entirely online. Verified fact
- Work in a role that gives you something to analyse. A certificate that teaches you the vocabulary is worth less than a year in an operations team where you get to see the problems, because the interview will ask you about the problems. Estimate
- Use the part-time or online format to fit around the job rather than the other way round, and pick a course whose assessment you can actually complete while working. Estimate
- Enter the market from the inside, with a domain and a network already in place. That is worth more to an employer than a slightly better degree. Estimate
- Wait until you know what you are specialising in. The professional body runs an entry-level business analysis certification for people new to the field, a practitioner certification for those with two to three years of experience, an experienced certification for five years or more, and separate certifications in agile analysis and business data analytics. That sequence is a good description of how the profession actually develops. Verified fact
- Take a graduate certificate or a master in business analysis, business transformation or business analytics if your first degree did not give you the analytical or the technical half. Estimate
- Combine it with a change of industry rather than only a change of title. A business analyst who arrives already knowing banking, health or logistics is worth more than one who arrives knowing none of them. Estimate
The sequence that actually matters
The qualification varies wildly across people who reach this role. The sequence barely varies at all.
| Stage | Typical age | What you are buying | How people get stuck here |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stage one: Year 12 and an offer | 17 to 18 | A place in a business, commerce, information systems or analytics degree, and the first habit of writing things down | Choosing a course by its title. There is no Bachelor of Business Analysis in Australia, so the course name is a weak guide, and the sensible move is to pick the major and the electives rather than the label. |
| Stage two: the degree | 18 to 21 | A discipline, some statistical literacy, one or two placements, and a first serious piece of writing you have to defend | Picking an elective bundle that never touches data, then discovering in the first analyst interview that the job expects you to read a dataset rather than a report. |
| Stage three: the first role | 21 to 24 | A graduate analyst or business analyst position, and the rhythm of working inside a delivery team | Being put on documentation and told to learn a system. This is the standard trap, and it is how a lot of people spend two years discovering that they are in the wrong job. |
| Stage four: the domain years | 24 to 28 | Deep knowledge of one industry, the ability to run a workshop, and a reputation for being right about that industry | Staying in a role where you only ever document other people's decisions and never get to make one. |
| Stage five: senior and beyond | 28 onward | The judgement about what to build, the standing to defend it, and a framework to talk about it with other analysts | Never learning the delivery side well enough to be trusted in a standup, and being left out of the decisions that determine the backlog. |
Pathways compared
Compare them on what they cost you, not just where they end. The last column matters most — it is where the pathway leaves you if the target role never arrives.
| Pathway | Live example | Years | Study cost | Difficulty | Biggest risk | If it doesn’t work out |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Three-year Bachelor of Business | Queensland University of Technology Bachelor of Business (course 413021), Brisbane. Lowest rank to receive an offer in the 2026 round was 62.40, and the course is covered by the QUT Offer Guarantee and Year 12 Early Offer Scheme. Verified fact | Three years of study, then roughly a year to land the first analyst role Estimate | About $101,900 for three years once living costs are included, of which $52,197 is student contribution. The rest can sit on a HECS-HELP loan, which you repay only through your income. Estimate | Standard | The qualification is generic, and a quarter of the people already doing the job have no degree at all. A business degree opens the door; it does not carry you through the room. | Very wide. The same degree leads into finance, marketing, human resources, operations and general management if the analysis market is cold in the year you graduate. |
| Three-year Bachelor of Business Analytics | University of Wollongong Bachelor of Business Analytics. Lowest selection rank 86.25 in the January 2026 round. The University of Newcastle, Flinders, Deakin, Swinburne, Edith Cowan and Western Sydney also offer an analytics-titled degree. Verified fact | Three years Estimate | The same student contribution as a general business degree where the course is classified under Business and Management, $17,399 a year for 2026. Where it is classified under Information Systems instead, it is $9,537. Verified fact | Standard | A newer degree with a small cohort, no alumni network, and a title a recruiter does not yet know how to place in an organisation. | Good. The quantitative half transfers to data analyst, product analyst and analyst engineer roles, so it is not a dead end if the business side does not suit you. |
| Bachelor of Information Systems | Federation University Australia Bachelor of Information Technology (Business Information Systems), with 450 hours of required work component recorded in the register Verified fact | Three years Estimate | A Band 2 student contribution of $9,537 a year for 2026, the cheapest Commonwealth-supported route into this career Verified fact | Standard | You will be hired as a systems analyst and then spend two years writing code you did not want to write. | Wide, and towards technology. This is the route that keeps software engineering open as a second option. |
| Any degree, then an analysis job | The commonest real path: a commerce, arts or science degree, then a graduate analyst or operations role inside a bank, insurer or government department before the title settles Estimate | Three years, then two to four years of work before the analyst title appears Estimate | Whatever the first degree costs, which is unrelated to this career Estimate | Standard | Slower, and it depends far more on the first job you land than on the degree you studied. | The widest of all, because you keep the option of the original field and can return to it. |
| TAFE certificate, then articulation into a degree | University of the Sunshine Coast Associate Degree in Business, two years in the register Verified fact | Four years in total to reach the same point as a three-year degree Estimate | Certificate fees are far below degree fees, and the degree years attract the usual student contribution Estimate | Standard | Four years for the same outcome, and the credit you are counting on is conditional on passing every subject of the certificate. | Good. You can stop after the certificate and go straight into an operations or administration role. |
Experience that runs alongside study
This matters more than marks. Every one of these is available before you graduate.
Consulting, banking and government graduate programs
Most large employers in this field hire through a graduate program rather than through open applications, and these programs rotate you through two or three teams. That is a fast way to find out whether you want the stakeholder-facing half of the job or the data half, and a business or commerce degree is the usual screening requirement. Estimate
The work placement built into the degree
The register records work hours for a large share of business degrees, from 96 hours at the University of the Sunshine Coast to 165 at Deakin and 175 at the Australian Catholic University, and 450 for the Federation University Bachelor of Information Technology (Business Information Systems). A placement is the cheapest evidence you will ever put on a résumé, and it is the only part of the degree where you find out whether you can hold a room. Verified fact
The International Institute of Business Analysis
The IIBA publishes the body of knowledge the profession is organised around and runs a three-level certification path: an entry-level business analysis certification for people new to the field, a practitioner certification for those with two to three years of experience, and an experienced certification for five years or more. It also runs separate certifications in agile analysis and business data analytics, an Australia chapter, and an Academic Partner Program that credits approved courses. In Australia the professional bodies that employers name are often industry institutes rather than one body for the job: the Queensland listing for the Griffith business degree names membership of the Institute of Public Administration Australia, the Australian Marketing Institute, the Australian Human Resources Institute and the Chartered Institute of Procurement and Supply, depending on the major. None of it is required to be employed, and that is the point of it being on this list: it is the shared vocabulary, not the ticket. Verified fact
Agile and delivery communities
Agile Alliance is the global body that maintains the Agile Manifesto and the Agile Practice Guide and runs member events including in Australia. Local delivery meetups, product communities and vendor user groups are where Australian business analysts actually find the people they end up working with, and where the argument about how a team should work gets settled in the way that matters. Verified fact
Summer internships and vacation programs
Bank and insurer vacation programs in particular will take a commerce student for eight to twelve weeks and convert a good placement into a graduate offer. Treat the summer as a trial of the work rather than as a way to earn money, because the conversion rate is the entire point. Estimate
Not-for-profit and community organisations
Smaller organisations will take a volunteer business analyst where a corporate one would use a contractor. The work is real, the stakes are lower, and the reference comes from someone who watched you do it rather than from a form. Estimate
Seven ways in, and they are not equally good
The qualification varies wildly across people doing this job. What they have in common is not the degree, and it is worth being blunt about the fact that no degree is required, because that is what makes this career unusual and what makes it open. Estimate

Estimate
There is no peak body and no registration
Some careers in this platform have a statutory regulator, a register, or a professional body whose membership you must have before you can be paid to do the work. This one has none of those, and pretending otherwise would be the most misleading thing a career guide could do about it. No body sets the entry requirements, no certificate is required to be employed, and no title is protected. That is a genuine freedom, and it is also the reason the interview and the portfolio do all the filtering that a registration would otherwise do. Estimate
The frameworks that do exist are real, current and worth knowing. The International Institute of Business Analysis publishes the body of knowledge the profession is organised around and a three-level certification path, and runs an Australia chapter. Agile Alliance maintains the Agile Manifesto and the Agile Practice Guide and runs events in Australia. Australian employers use the vocabulary of both, particularly in the public and financial services sectors, where the phrases in a job description map onto them closely. Learn the vocabulary, because it is what interviews are conducted in. Do not treat the certificates as entry tickets, because they are not. Verified fact
The sequence that barely changes
Across people doing this job, the qualification varies wildly and the sequence barely varies at all. The shape is remarkably consistent, and knowing it is more useful than knowing which subject you chose. Estimate
| Stage | Typical age | What you buy | How people get stuck |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stage one: Year 12 and an offer Estimate | 17 to 18 Estimate | A place in a business, commerce, information systems or analytics degree, and the first habit of writing things down Estimate | Choosing a course by its title. There is no Bachelor of Business Analysis in Australia, so the course name is a weak guide, and the sensible move is to pick the major and the electives rather than the label. Estimate |
| Stage two: the degree Estimate | 18 to 21 Estimate | A discipline, some statistical literacy, one or two placements, and a first serious piece of writing you have to defend Estimate | Picking an elective bundle that never touches data, then discovering in the first analyst interview that the job expects you to read a dataset rather than a report. Estimate |
| Stage three: the first role Estimate | 21 to 24 Estimate | A graduate analyst or business analyst position, and the rhythm of working inside a delivery team Estimate | Being put on documentation and told to learn a system. This is the standard trap, and it is how a lot of people spend two years discovering that they are in the wrong job. Estimate |
| Stage four: the domain years Estimate | 24 to 28 Estimate | Deep knowledge of one industry, the ability to run a workshop, and a reputation for being right about that industry Estimate | Staying in a role where you only ever document other people's decisions and never get to make one. Estimate |
| Stage five: senior and beyond Estimate | 28 onward Estimate | The judgement about what to build, the standing to defend it, and a framework to talk about it with other analysts Estimate | Never learning the delivery side well enough to be trusted in a standup, and being left out of the decisions that determine the backlog. Estimate |
The age distribution is the reason this sequence is not a straight line. Only 5 per cent of the ANZSCO 2247 workforce is 15 to 24, and 20.6 per cent is 55 or older. Very few people start out in this career, and a large share of the people in it arrived from somewhere else. That is not a weakness in the occupation; it is what an occupation with no entry gate looks like. Verified fact
The second thing the sequence shows is that the qualification stops mattering quickly. By stage four, an employer is buying your knowledge of one industry and your judgement about that industry, not your transcript. A student who spends the first three years of the career trying to get the right degree has understood the market backwards. Estimate
What each pathway actually costs you
A comparison on more than where each one ends. The right column for most readers is the last one: what you are left holding if the target role never appears. Estimate
| Pathway | A real Australian example | Years to the target role | Study cost | Biggest risk | If the target role never appears |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Three-year Bachelor of Business Estimate | QUT Bachelor of Business (413021). Lowest rank to receive an offer 62.40 in the 2026 round, and covered by the QUT Offer Guarantee and Year 12 Early Offer Scheme. Verified fact | 4 Estimate | About $101,900 for three years with living costs, of which $52,197 is student contribution and the rest can sit on a HECS-HELP loan repaid through income. Estimate | The qualification is generic, and a quarter of the people already doing the job have no degree at all. Estimate | Very wide. The same degree leads into finance, marketing, human resources, operations and general management if the analysis market is cold when you graduate. Estimate |
| Three-year Bachelor of Business Analytics Estimate | University of Wollongong Bachelor of Business Analytics. Lowest selection rank 86.25 in the January 2026 round. Verified fact | 3 Estimate | $17,399 a year for 2026 where the course is classified under Business and Management, $9,537 where it is classified under Information Systems. Verified fact | A new degree with a small cohort, no alumni network, and a title a recruiter does not yet know how to place. Estimate | Good. The quantitative half transfers to data analyst, product analyst and analyst engineer roles. Estimate |
| Bachelor of Information Systems Estimate | Federation University Australia Bachelor of Information Technology (Business Information Systems), with 450 hours of required work component recorded in the register. Verified fact | 3 Estimate | A Band 2 student contribution of $9,537 a year for 2026, the cheapest Commonwealth-supported route into this career. Verified fact | You will be hired as a systems analyst and then spend two years writing code you did not want to write. Estimate | Wide, and towards technology. This is the route that keeps software engineering open as a second option. Estimate |
| Any degree, then an analysis job Estimate | The commonest real path: a commerce, arts or science degree, then a graduate analyst or operations role inside a bank, insurer or government department before the title settles. Estimate | 5 Estimate | Whatever the first degree costs, which is unrelated to this career. Estimate | Slower, and it depends far more on the first job you land than on the degree you studied. Estimate | The widest of all, because you keep the option of the original field and can return to it. Estimate |
| TAFE certificate, then articulation into a degree Estimate | University of the Sunshine Coast Associate Degree in Business, two years in the register Verified fact | 4 Estimate | Certificate fees are far below degree fees, and the degree years attract the usual student contribution. Estimate | Four years for the same outcome, and the credit you are counting on is conditional on passing every subject. Estimate | Good. You can stop after the certificate and go straight into an operations or administration role. Estimate |
The two degrees that look identical cost different amounts
The Australian Government sets the maximum student contribution for a Commonwealth-supported place by funding cluster. Law, accounting, administration, economics, commerce, communications, society and culture sit in the highest band, at $17,399 a full-time year for 2026, rising to $18,025 in 2027. Computing sits in a lower band, at $9,537 for 2026 and $9,880 for 2027. A business degree is in the first group and an information systems degree is in the second, and the difference over a three-year degree is $23,586. Verified fact
The trap is that the field of education is attached to the course, not to the subject you are studying. Several Bachelor of Business Analytics degrees are classified under Business and Management and therefore in the higher band, while others are classified under Information Systems and therefore in the lower one, even though the course titles are nearly identical. Before you compare two providers on price, look up each course's field of education in the register and check its band with the provider. Verified fact

Postgraduate study
Usually a mid-career decision, not a next step. The honest question is whether it adds anything your first three jobs would not.
Graduate Certificate in Business Studies
Only after you have worked in a role where you were the person who had to define something. Before that, a certificate teaches you vocabulary you cannot yet use. Estimate
Graduate Diploma in Business Studies
When you are changing industry as well as job title, and you want the domain knowledge as well as the analysis. It is the same money as a second year of the highest student contribution band. Estimate
Graduate Certificate in Business Analysis
This is the only postgraduate qualification in the register whose title names the job, and it is worth it when your degree gave you the business half or the technical half but not both. It teaches process management and business analysis rather than general business, and it is short enough to do while you are working. Estimate
Business analysis certifications from the International Institute of Business Analysis
When a specific employer names it, which is common in consulting and government contracting. Otherwise, the shared vocabulary is worth more to you than the certificate, and the same material is free to read at the local agile and business analysis community events. Estimate
What is in this table, and what is not
No Australian course is titled Bachelor of Business Analysis, so this table is built from the register's management and commerce, business and management, and information systems fields rather than from a single course that does not exist. The one undergraduate qualification in the register whose title does name the job is the Federation University Bachelor of Information Technology (Business Analysis), and it is in the table below. Verified fact
The September 2026 register snapshot holds 119 providers and 629 courses across those three fields, plus the two courses whose titles name business analysis, which sit in a fourth field. Forty-two of those providers are set out here. The rule applied was that each one has to offer a qualification an employer would plausibly recruit a business analyst from, and that every state and territory appears at least once. The providers left out are mostly private institutes offering a general business certificate, and a few Australian universities whose business degrees sit outside these fields altogether. Verified fact
Nothing in the course column was typed. Every course name, campus, duration and work component is copied out of the register, so each row can be checked against the source. Where the register records required work hours, the table says so, because a placement inside the degree is the cheapest evidence you will ever put on a résumé, and the figures run from 10 hours at one Queensland provider to 3,040 at a private Melbourne institute. Verified fact
Twenty-nine courses in the register have analytics, decision or data in the title, and they come from nineteen providers. Fifteen of those providers are in this table, and eleven of them are flagged, because those are the closest thing Australia has to a course built for this work. They are also the courses where the field of education decides the student contribution band, which is worth checking before you compare two providers on price. Verified fact
The same course title, two different student contribution bands
A Bachelor of Business Analytics at the University of Wollongong, the University of Newcastle, Flinders University or Western Sydney University is classified under Business and Management, which sits in the band that includes commerce and costs $17,399 a year for 2026. A Bachelor of Business Analytics at Deakin, Swinburne, Macquarie or La Trobe is classified under Information Systems, and the Federation University Bachelor of Information Technology (Business Analysis) under information technology, which sit in the lower band at $9,537. Over three years that is a difference of $23,586 for the same job market, so look up the field of education before you look up the price. Verified fact
How to read the selection rank column
Three different admissions bodies publish three different measures, and they answer different questions. The table says which is which rather than presenting one number as if it were the same everywhere. Estimate
For New South Wales and the ACT, UAC publishes the lowest selection rank at which an offer was actually made. For Queensland, QTAC publishes the lowest rank to receive an offer, both excluding and including adjustment factors, alongside a minimum selection threshold. For Western Australia, TISC publishes the minimum rank required to be considered. A lowest-offer rank tells you what a real applicant was accepted at. A minimum threshold tells you the floor below which you are not looked at. They are not interchangeable, so the table labels each one. Verified fact
Twenty-five of the forty-two entries have no published figure, and in most cases that is because the state admissions body did not publish one for 2026 rather than because the course is selective or the provider is small. Two entries are marked indicative, which is the admissions body's own signal that no Year 12 offers were made in that round and the figure is a projection for the next one. Treat an indicative rank as a starting point rather than as an offer. Verified fact
The ranks also do not travel between campuses. The Australian Catholic University entry here is the Banyo campus in Brisbane, and the ranks UAC publishes for that university relate to its New South Wales campuses, so they are not reproduced here. The Queensland register still records the Sunshine Coast provider under its former name, University of the Sunshine Coast, while the state admissions listing now calls it UniSC, so search under both names. Verified fact
A selection rank is not a measure of course quality
A business degree at a low-ranked provider with a real placement will get you a first interview. A business degree at a famous provider with none will not. Nothing in the selection rank column predicts whether the course teaches process modelling, whether the business school runs a consulting society, whether first-year tutorials have twenty people in them or four hundred, or whether the analytics degree has a laboratory. The register cannot answer any of those questions, and neither can this table. Ask them on an open day. Estimate
What the table is actually for
The useful columns are the title, the work hours and the exit options. The rank is the column everybody looks at first and the one that decides the least. Estimate
The fastest route to a business analyst job in Australia is a degree that gives you three things in this order: a placement, a business context, and enough data to be useful. A Bachelor of Business Analytics with a recorded work component is a stronger signal than a general Bachelor of Business from a more famous university, because the work component is something you can describe in three sentences in an interview and the course title is something nobody outside the sector can interpret. Estimate
The second thing to do with this table is check the exit. A general business degree keeps finance, marketing, human resources, operations and general management open if the analysis market happens to be cold in the year you graduate, and in a market with no registration requirement, where you can go next is worth more than where you came in. A specialist analytics degree has a narrower exit and a better first destination. Estimate
And the third is to stop treating the degree as the last thing you will ever need to pay for. Most business analysts in Australia do not have a business degree, and a quarter of the people already doing the job have no degree at all. A degree is a useful way into the first role. It is not a licence, and the career will not stop when you stop studying. Verified fact
The gates
What actually stands between you and a place. Where a gate does not apply, that is stated rather than omitted — an absent requirement is decision-relevant information.
Adjustment and access schemes
Points added to a raw rank. These are systematically under-claimed relative to eligibility — check every one.
Educational Access Scheme, New South Wales and the ACT
If your Year 11 and 12 studies were seriously affected by circumstances beyond your control or choosing, an institution can increase your selection rank for a course. There are 18 specific circumstances institutions will consider and you should claim every one that applies. It is not an offer in itself: you still have to meet the published lowest selection rank and compete for a place. The December 2026 round deadline is 19 November 2026, and eligibility letters are released progressively from 17 December 2026. Verified fact
Equity Scholarships, New South Wales and the ACT
Awarded to applicants who demonstrate the greatest financial need, particularly those who receive Centrelink income support payments. Institutions consider the educational challenges and applicant attributes covered by the scheme as well as their own scholarship requirements. The December 2026 round application deadline is 10 December 2026, with outcomes released on 24 December 2026. Verified fact
Queensland assistance schemes
Queensland runs its own set through the state admissions body rather than sharing the New South Wales or Victorian schemes. The published list includes an Educational Access Scheme, an Elite Athlete Adjustment Scheme, special admission schemes, an equity schemes program, a Rural and Regional Enterprise Scholarship for regional and remote students, and a substantial non-ATAR entry pathway. The award and eligibility rules differ from the eastern states, so a scheme you qualify for in one state is not automatically available in another. Verified fact
Victorian equity schemes and scholarships
The Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre runs the equity schemes and scholarship programs for the state, with categories of evidence set out on its categories and evidence page and applications made through the VTAC portal. Applications for 2027 courses are closed for the current cycle, and the next cycle opens in the year before entry. Most Victorian scholarships are tied to the courses you apply for through VTAC, with a separate group for current students and non-VTAC applicants. Verified fact
Regional and rural bonus schemes, and the schemes that are under-claimed
Regional bonus points, Indigenous entry schemes, athlete schemes and subject bonus points all exist in most states, and they are systematically under-claimed relative to how many people qualify. A student from a regional school, a student in a year of a career change, a student who has been in a technical or trade job, and a First Nations student all have access to points or offers that a student with a straight Year 12 record does not. Applying is a decision made in the first half of Year 12, and the deadlines are earlier than the main admissions deadlines. Estimate
Early entry
Offers made before results are released. Applications usually open around August and cost nothing.
Schools Recommendation Scheme, New South Wales and the ACT
An early offer route in which institutions assess you on criteria other than, or in addition to, your ATAR, usually your Year 11 results and your school's assessment of your aptitudes. Applications close on 11 September 2026, the first conditional and unconditional offers are released on 12 November 2026, and conditional offers convert to unconditional on 23 December 2026. In 2025 universities made 15,900 conditional or unconditional offers to Year 12 students before ATARs were released. It is not available for every course, and each institution publishes its own criteria. Verified fact
QUT Year 12 Early Offer Scheme and Offer Guarantee
The Queensland University of Technology listing for its Bachelor of Business states that the course is covered by the QUT Offer Guarantee and the Year 12 Early Offer Scheme, and the published minimum selection threshold for the course is 70.00. The scheme makes offers on the basis of Year 12 subject results before the ATAR is finalised. Verified fact
Griffith Year 12 Early Offer Guarantee and the VET Guarantee
The Griffith listing for its Bachelor of Business states that the Griffith VET Guarantee and the Year 12 Early Offer Guarantee apply to the program, and that applicants who do not meet the minimum ATAR or selection rank may automatically be considered for a place in the Diploma of Business with an offer into the Bachelor of Business conditional on completing the diploma, after which they move into the second year of the degree. The degree also has fast-track options over three trimesters. Verified fact
Alternative and back-door entries
No rank closes most careers. It only changes the first two years.
A TAFE certificate or diploma, then articulation into the degree
This is the route with no selection rank at all. The September 2026 register lists two-year associate degrees in business at the University of the Sunshine Coast, the University of Southern Queensland, Bond University, Charles Sturt University, Alphacrucis College and Top Education Group, and an associate degree is built to carry credit into the bachelor degree that follows it. Griffith offers the same shape in reverse, with a conditional offer into its Bachelor of Business for applicants who take a place in its Diploma of Business. The catch is that the credit is usually conditional on passing every subject of the certificate. Verified fact
Non-ATAR entry, and the schemes for people whose circumstances changed
Queensland maintains a large non-ATAR entry pathway, along with pathways for employment experience, competency-based training, tertiary study and bridging programs, and the Skills for Tertiary Admissions Test for a small number of courses. This is the practical route for a mature-age applicant or anyone whose Year 12 was interrupted, and it is also the route through which many people enter a business degree with a job already. The state admissions body sets the evidence requirements, and they differ by state. Verified fact
External and online study while you work
The register shows business degrees delivered by external and private providers with campuses in several states at once, including the Adelaide Institute of Higher Education with campuses in Adelaide and Melbourne and AAPoly with campuses in Melbourne, Northbridge and Sydney, and it shows universities running business degrees entirely online. VTAC lists the online universities partnership as a pathway for applicants who do not want a school-leaver rank. A student who already has a wage should think hard here: a degree studied badly alongside a full-time job is the most common way people fail one. Verified fact
Any degree at all, and an analyst job instead
The occupation statistics show that 24.8 per cent of the people working in ANZSCO 2247 Management and Organisation Analysts hold no degree at all, and only 5 per cent of the workforce is aged 15 to 24. A degree is not a condition of employment in this field. If you already have a degree in something else, or if you would rather not spend three years and fifty thousand dollars on one, the honest advice is to get into a job where you have to understand how something works and learn the analysis on the inside. Verified fact
A graduate certificate or a master, usually after some work
The Australian Government sets the maximum student contribution by funding cluster, and a business degree sits in the highest band at $17,399 a full-time year for 2026 while a computing degree sits at $9,537. A Commonwealth-supported graduate certificate in business at Western Sydney University cost about $8,699 for a 2026 domestic place, and a graduate diploma $17,399, so a postgraduate qualification is not an enormous step up financially. The professional body publishes an entry-level certification, a practitioner certification for two to three years of experience and an experienced certification for five years or more, which is a reasonable guide to the order in which the qualification should be attempted. Verified fact
Which route through this career is right for you depends on your own rank, your state, your budget and how old you are, and there is more than one defensible answer to each of those questions. A personalised plan can set the routes side by side against your own numbers rather than describing them in the abstract. Estimate
Subject selection — The general advice holds in every state. The specifics below use the Queensland assumed-knowledge requirements because they are the ones published in detail.
Take these
- Mathematics, at least General Mathematics and preferably Mathematics Methods. The Queensland assumed knowledge for the accounting, economics, finance and marketing majors in a business degree is General Mathematics, Mathematics Methods or Specialist Mathematics at Units 3 and 4 with a C, and the requirement is not decorative: it is the difference between opening a quantitative major and being told to take it in second year. Verified fact
- English, or English Extension. Any General or Applied English subject at Units 3 and 4 with a C is the stated assumed knowledge for a business degree, and a business analyst writes more than people expect: a requirements pack, a user story with acceptance criteria, a process map, and a business case that has to survive a finance director. Verified fact
- Business Studies or Economics, if you can fit one. Not for the content, which the degree teaches again better, but because it is the fastest way to find out whether you enjoy this kind of work before committing three years to it. Estimate
- One more subject you are genuinely good at. A second mathematics or economics subject, a computing subject, or a language. The job is built on being able to explain one thing clearly to people who do not share your background, and the subject that teaches you to do that is the one you are best at. Estimate
Think twice about
- Design and Technology. It sounds technical and it is the wrong kind of technical. Nothing in this career is built on it. Opinion
- A subject chosen because somebody said it leads to business. The subject list for this career is short and generic on purpose, and a career adviser offering a narrow list for a career with no registration requirement is selling something. Opinion
- A third mathematics unit if you are aiming at a data-heavy role and have not used mathematics for two years. The jump from General to Methods is real, and a credit is a great deal better than a fail. Estimate
Money to help you get there
Far more scholarship money is offered than is claimed. Rounds close early, often in September.
Indigenous Commonwealth Education Costs Scholarships
One of three types of scholarship funded through the Indigenous Student Success Program, which since 1 July 2025 has been administered by the Department of Education. These cover education costs for students enrolled in enabling, undergraduate, honours or postgraduate awards, such as compulsory textbooks, study equipment or a laptop. Applications go to the scholarships office or the Indigenous Higher Education Unit at the university, and the value and duration are set by the university before the start of semester. Verified fact
Indigenous Commonwealth Accommodation Costs Scholarships
The second of the three program types, covering relocation and accommodation costs for students in enabling, undergraduate, honours or postgraduate awards, such as removalist hire or rent assistance. The program also carries the caveat that other government support, including the ABSTUDY Residential Cost Option, relocation scholarships and Services Australia student start-up loans, may affect your eligibility, so a university enrolment office is the right place to check how the pieces fit together. Verified fact
Indigenous Commonwealth Reward Scholarships
The third of the three program types, and the one worth planning for early. These act like a prize for a student who has achieved exceptionally high standards as determined by the university, so they are usually awarded in the middle of a degree rather than at the start. The program commenced in January 2017 and combines what used to be three separate programs, and its funding is weighted towards First Nations students who are financially disadvantaged or from remote and regional areas. Verified fact
UAC Equity Scholarships
Awarded to applicants who demonstrate the greatest financial need, particularly those who receive Centrelink income support payments, and they help with the costs of going to university. You can apply through UAC for undergraduate or postgraduate study, directly to a participating institution, or through VTAC or QTAC, and a very limited number are open to international applicants. The December 2026 round application deadline is 10 December 2026 and outcomes are released on 24 December 2026. Verified fact
State equity and access scholarships, including for regional and remote students
Each state runs its own access and equity scholarship programs alongside the Commonwealth ones, and the Queensland and Victorian programs are applied for through the state admissions body rather than the university. Some are tied to the courses you apply for and some are for current students only. If your family income is modest, or you are the first in your family to attend university, or you are from a regional or remote area, these are the schemes worth an afternoon of reading, and they are the ones most people never open. Estimate
The gates, and the one that is not a gate
There is no admissions test, no interview for most courses, and no registration at the end. For a career with no statutory regulator, the hard requirements are unusually soft, and the schemes that adjust for disadvantage are unusually important. Estimate
Read the gates above as what they are. There is no test, because business analysis is not a clinical profession with a safety threshold. The interview is rare, because a business degree is not a portfolio course. The subject prerequisites are limited to English and, for the quantitative majors, a mathematics subject, because that is the only assumption a business school makes about what you can do. And there is no registration, licence or protected title at the end, which is the single fact that most changes the shape of this career compared with most others. Estimate
The absence of a registration cuts both ways and it is worth being clear about both. It means no credential stands between you and the first interview, and that a degree is a convenience rather than a qualification. It also means nobody is vouching for you: there is no body that has checked you can actually do the job. In a market where the occupation is growing but not on the shortage list, that places the entire burden on evidence, and the evidence has to come from somewhere in your first two years of work. Estimate
The one place a gate does bite is mathematics, and it bites quietly. The Queensland assumed knowledge for the quantitative majors in a business degree is a mathematics subject at Units 3 and 4 with a C. A student who takes no mathematics at all can still be admitted, and will then find themselves locked out of the accounting, economics, finance and marketing majors, and further out of the analytics degrees, at the moment they are trying to choose one. Decide the mathematics subject in Year 11, not in the first week of the degree. Verified fact
There is no peak body, and that is not a gap in the information
Some careers have a statutory regulator, some have a peak body whose membership is the price of entry, and some have a certification employers check for. This one has none of the three, and any guide that tells you otherwise is describing a different country. What exists instead is a professional body that publishes a body of knowledge and a certification path, an agile community that maintains the practice guide the work runs on, and a set of industry institutes that employers name depending on which part of the business you are in. Learn the vocabulary. Do not build a plan around a credential that will not be checked. Estimate
The schemes that are under-claimed
The adjustment and access schemes in every state are claimed by a minority of the people who qualify for them, and the reason is always the same: the deadlines arrive before anyone tells you they exist. Estimate
The New South Wales and ACT Educational Access Scheme is the clearest example. Eighteen specific circumstances are considered, and the guidance is to claim every one that applies. It is not an automatic offer, but it can raise a selection rank enough to change an outcome, and it costs nothing but a folder of evidence. The December 2026 deadline is 19 November 2026, which is a month before the main round and well before the year is out. Verified fact
The early offer routes are the other under-claimed group, and for this career they are unusually valuable. In 2025 universities made 15,900 conditional or unconditional offers to Year 12 students before ATARs were released, through the Schools Recommendation Scheme in New South Wales and the ACT and the equivalent programs in Queensland. A business degree has more places than a medicine degree and fewer applicants than an engineering one, so the early offer window is the single best-value hour of application work available. Verified fact
And the one that is most often missed is the simplest. Queensland's non-ATAR pathway and the equivalent schemes elsewhere are the route in for anyone whose Year 12 was interrupted, who is returning to study, or who is coming to a degree for the second time at thirty-five. The occupation data supports using that door: a quarter of the people already doing this job have no degree at all, so the market does not check. Verified fact
Money that is not a loan
Three of the five scholarships below come from a single Commonwealth program that funds universities to support First Nations students. It is the largest and most reliably available pool in this career, and it is very badly under-applied to. Estimate
The Indigenous Student Success Program is not a single scholarship. It is a block of Commonwealth funding to universities, which they then turn into three kinds of award: education costs scholarships for things like textbooks, study equipment and a laptop; accommodation costs scholarships for relocation and rent; and reward scholarships for students who have achieved exceptionally high standards. Since 1 July 2025 the program has been administered by the Department of Education rather than the National Indigenous Australians Agency, and the funding is weighted towards students who are financially disadvantaged or from remote and regional areas. Verified fact
The practical advice is to go to the university rather than to the program. Applications for new scholarships go to the scholarships office or the Indigenous Higher Education Unit at the institution, and the university is also the right place to check how an ISSP award interacts with ABSTUDY, relocation assistance and Services Australia student start-up loans, because those programs can affect eligibility and the interaction is genuinely confusing. Adelaide University's Indigenous Commonwealth Education Costs Scholarship, for example, is $16,000 paid as $4,000 a year for up to four years, with applications opening on 5 August 2026 and closing on 26 August 2026. Verified fact
For everyone else, the most reliable money in this career is not a scholarship at all. A Commonwealth-supported place costs $17,399 a year in the band that covers business, and the loan to cover it is repaid only through your income, at a rate that starts at nothing until your income crosses a threshold. The cost panel works through what that means in dollars over a career, because the difference between $17,399 and $9,537 a year is the difference between a decision that feels possible and one that does not. Verified fact
General information only — not financial advice
The figures in this section are indicative estimates only and are general in nature. They are modelled from published rates and typical costs, and they take no account of your personal objectives, financial situation or needs.
They are not quotes, and they are not a projection of what you personally will pay or earn. Course fees, indexation rates, salaries and repayment thresholds all change.
Before you act on any of it, speak to a qualified financial adviser about your own circumstances, and confirm course costs and fees directly with the institution and your state admissions centre.
What it actually costs
Set your own situation. Everything updates live, and every figure is calculated in your browser from the assumptions listed below — none of it is a number quoted at you.
Every line, three ways
Minimum, average and premium. The deferrable column is the one most people misread — a deferred cost is repaid through the tax system, not paid up front.
| Cost | Minimum | Average | Premium | Deferrable |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Student contribution (tuition) A business or commerce degree is Band 4 at $17,399 per full-time year in 2026, and an analytics degree classified under Information Systems is Band 2 at $9,537. The cheapest column is three years at the Band 2 rate ($28,611), the middle column three years at Band 4 ($52,197), and the expensive column a five-year combined degree at Band 4 ($86,995). A domestic student in a Commonwealth supported place does not pay this up front — it goes on HECS-HELP. Verified fact | $28,611 | $52,197 | $86,995 | Yes |
| Student services and amenities fee Capped nationally at $373 for a full-time student in 2026, and deferrable through SA-HELP rather than HECS-HELP. Verified fact | $1,119 | $1,119 | $1,865 | Yes |
| Textbooks, printing and software Business textbooks are reissued frequently. Second-hand copies and library reserve cut this substantially. Analytics degrees add statistical software licences that some universities provide and others do not. Estimate | $2,400 | $2,400 | $4,000 | No |
| Laptop and technology A one-off cost. A business analyst needs a reliable machine for long documents, spreadsheets and virtual meetings, not a powerful one, so the premium column buys durability rather than capability. Estimate | $1,000 | $1,500 | $2,500 | No |
| Living costs while studying Zero if you live at home for the whole degree. The average column assumes moving out for the final two years of a three-year degree; the premium column assumes five years in a capital city. This single line moves the total more than every other line combined, and it is the one most within your control. Estimate | $0 | $44,000 | $160,000 | No |
Return and assumptions
What these numbers assume
A graduate starting salary of $75,000, which sits at the bottom of the Indeed-reported range for a business analyst ($73,918) and matches the lower end of graduate programs in consulting and banking. Estimate
Early-career salary growth of 8 per cent a year. The occupation grew 10.7 per cent in the three years to November 2025, and analyst roles in consulting and finance tend to move faster than the average in the first three years. Estimate
Compulsory HELP repayment modelled at 5 per cent of salary. From the 2026-27 income year repayments are marginal — nothing below $69,528, then 15 cents in each dollar above it up to $129,717, then $9,028 plus 17 cents up to $186,050, then 10 per cent of total repayment income above that — so the effective share of a business analyst's salary rises from about 1.1 per cent at $75,000 towards 4 per cent at $100,000 and 10 per cent at the top band. A blended rate of 5 per cent across the career is defensible. Verified fact
Long-run growth of 3.5 per cent a year over a 40-year career, well below the early-career rate because progression flattens once you are past senior analyst level and most analysts do not move into executive roles. Forecast
Break-even measures when compulsory HELP repayments have covered the net cost of the degree after work income. It is not the same as clearing the debt, because indexation is not modelled here, and it says nothing about whether the degree was worth it in any other sense. Opinion
The default settings assume living at home and earning $15,000 a year while studying. Moving out is the single change that most alters every figure on this panel. Opinion
HECS-HELP covers the student contribution for a domestic student in a Commonwealth supported place. You pay nothing up front and repay through the tax system once your income passes the threshold, which is $69,528 for the 2026-27 income year. Verified fact
From the 2026-27 income year compulsory repayments are calculated marginally, on the portion of income above $69,528 rather than on the whole income. Between $69,529 and $129,717 the rate is 15 cents in each dollar over the threshold. Between $129,718 and $186,050 it is $9,028 plus 17 cents in each dollar over $129,717. Above $186,050 it is 10 per cent of total repayment income. Verified fact
SA-HELP defers the student services and amenities fee, separately from HECS-HELP. It is a small amount and many students pay it directly without realising it can be deferred. Verified fact
FEE-HELP applies to full-fee places including some postgraduate business courses at private providers. FEE-HELP carries a lifetime limit, so a full-fee degree consumes a large share of it before any further study is reached. Verified fact
Youth Allowance and ABSTUDY are the Commonwealth income supports available to students who meet the age, income and independence tests. They are means tested against parental income for most school leavers. Estimate
Paid internships and vacation programs in banks and consulting firms carry a wage for the weeks worked and convert a good placement into a graduate offer. Treat the summer as a trial of the work rather than as a way to earn money, because the conversion rate is the entire point. Estimate
What it actually costs
Business is the most expensive Commonwealth supported band there is. Almost all of it is deferrable, and the part that is not is where the real pressure sits. Verified fact
Band 4 is the ceiling
Law, accounting, administration, economics, commerce, communications, society and culture all sit in Band 4, at $17,399 per full-time year in 2026. That is more than three times the Band 1 rate and the highest student contribution the Commonwealth allows. Verified fact
It is also deferrable in full. A domestic student in a Commonwealth supported place pays none of it up front, which is the single most misunderstood fact in Australian study costs. The cash you actually need is rent, textbooks, a laptop and the living costs while you study. Verified fact
The same course title, two different bands
A Bachelor of Business Analytics at the University of Wollongong, the University of Newcastle, Flinders University or Western Sydney University is classified under Business and Management, which sits in Band 4 at $17,399 a year. The same title at Deakin, Swinburne, Macquarie or La Trobe is classified under Information Systems, which sits in Band 2 at $9,537. Over three years that is a difference of $23,586 for the same job market, so look up the field of education before you look up the price. Verified fact
Three versions of the same degree
The cheapest and most expensive routes to an identical job market differ by roughly $220,000, and most of that gap is rent. Estimate
Read the gap carefully
Living costs account for the majority of the difference between these three columns, not tuition. A student living at home while studying a three-year Band 2 analytics degree reaches the same job market as a student in a five-year combined Band 4 degree in Sydney, for about one eighth of the money. Estimate
What the expensive column buys is proximity to the graduate program market and a second degree. Whether that is worth $220,000 is a real question rather than a rhetorical one, and it depends on things this page does not know about you. Opinion
The verdict
Several ways of asking “which is best”, answered separately — because the best pathway depends entirely on what you are optimising for.
Best value
A Commonwealth-supported place in the lower student contribution band at a public university, in a course that records a work component
Value in this career is not in a name, because no name in Australia is prestigious in business analysis. It is in three things that cost nothing extra: a Commonwealth-supported place, which costs the same student contribution at every university; a work component recorded in the register, which is the cheapest evidence you will ever put on a resume; and the lower funding band that information systems and business analytics degrees sit in. The same job title in the two bands differs by $23,586 over three years. Estimate
Which one is yours depends on your selection rank · which providers you can reach · whether a Commonwealth Supported Place is available to you
Fastest to earning
A certificate or diploma that articulates into the second year of a business degree
The register lists two-year and four-year business degrees alongside the three-year norm, and the fastest way into paid analysis work is to start below the degree. Articulation credit removes a year of fees and a year of living costs, and the two years of paid work built into the route are what make you a candidate rather than an applicant. The cost of this route is time: the same place a school leaver reaches in three years, you reach in four, at the age of nineteen or twenty rather than twenty-one or twenty-two. Estimate
Which one is yours depends on which state you are in · whether you can work while you study · your selection rank for the degree years
Most prestigious
A business or commerce degree from a name employers already shortlist, with a placement attached to it
There is no prestige ladder here the way there is in law or medicine: no registration to enter, no protected title, and 24.8 per cent of the people already doing the job hold no degree at all. What a well-known name buys is a first interview. A placement inside the degree is what gets you through it, so a famous course without one is worth less than an ordinary course with one. Estimate
Which one is yours depends on your selection rank · whether you can move to the city · which sector you want to work in
Lowest cost to you
The lower funding band, with no compulsory postgraduate study afterwards
Nothing after the degree is compulsory for this career, so the postgraduate line in the money panel is genuinely zero rather than a rounding of a required course. There is no registration, no mandatory certificate and no professional body whose membership you must hold. The cheapest version of this calculation is a three-year business analytics degree at the lower student contribution with the cheapest housing arrangement available, which comes to about $34,800 in the calculator, and with $12,000 a year of part-time work the cash you find yourself is close to nothing. Estimate
Which one is yours depends on whether you can live at home · whether you can work while studying · your selection rank
Best long-term return
A general business degree with a real quantitative spine, so the exit stays wide while the technical half pulls
The occupation profile puts median full-time earnings in management and organisation analysts at $2,444 a week and in the ICT analyst group at $2,697, and the ICT group is younger and holds more postgraduate qualifications. A business degree that keeps finance, operations and management open protects you if the analysis market is cold in the year you graduate, and a statistics or database spine on top of it moves you towards the better-paid group without closing anything. Estimate
Which one is yours depends on whether you want the business half or the technical half · how much statistics you enjoy · whether you will keep studying after you graduate
Best if you are academically strong
A business analytics degree with a published selection rank, built on a mathematics or computer science background
The published selection ranks for the analytics degrees run from 86.25 at the University of Wollongong to 87.70 at Macquarie University in the January 2026 round, which is where strong school results and a mathematics or computer science background pay off. Only two of these degrees had a published rank that round, so the number you need is not always the number you will find, and you should check the admissions body rather than assume a course is open or closed. Estimate
Which one is yours depends on your selection rank · whether you want the technical half of the work · which providers publish a rank for this course
Best if you are changing or returning
An external or online degree studied alongside a wage, in a field where a fifth of the workforce is already over 55
The register shows private and external providers delivering business degrees with campuses in several states at once, and universities running business degrees entirely online. The occupation itself is old-skewed: 20.6 per cent of it is 55 or older and only 5 per cent is aged 15 to 24, so this is a career people walk into late, and the route that fits a working adult is the one that bends around the job rather than the other way round. Estimate
Which one is yours depends on whether you can study part time · how much time you can give each week · whether you need a Commonwealth Supported Place
Best if you are changing what you do
The degree you actually want, followed by a role that puts you in front of a process or a dataset
Most Australian business analysts did not begin as business analysts, because most of them did not study business. They started in operations, a bank graduate program, a government analyst position, consulting or retail management, and the title arrived once there was enough evidence behind them. The strongest version of this route starts from the degree you want anyway and gets you into a job where you have to look at how something works, because a qualification that describes the job you already want is worth more than one that describes a job you have not tried. Estimate

Decision points and contingencies
The last column is the useful one. A plan with no fallback is a wish.
| Decision point | When | Preferred move | If that’s unavailable |
|---|---|---|---|
| Whether to take a business analytics degree or a general business degree with an analytics major | When you choose your major, after the first year of study | Take the analytics degree where one is available in the lower student contribution band and it records a work component, because the title is rarer than the skills and the recorded work hours are what you are interviewed on. | Take the general business degree and build the quantitative half yourself with a statistics major or minor, a database subject and a capstone project, and keep the exit wide into finance, operations and management. The occupations data says the business half is the scarce half, so do not give it up to get the technical one. Estimate |
| Whether to take the Commonwealth-supported place or pay the fees yourself | When you accept your offer, before the census date | Accept the Commonwealth-supported place. The student contribution is the only tuition you pay, and it can be deferred onto a HELP loan rather than paid while you are a student. | Ask the university for the fee for your specific course in writing before you decline anything, because private and external providers set their own fees and there is no HELP loan for them. The register shows that a business degree from a private provider can carry no Commonwealth funding at all, which changes the money panel completely. Verified fact |
| Whether to take a course with a work component when the placement is unpaid and in another city | When you are choosing between two courses, one with recorded work hours and one without | Take the one with the work component even if it means relocating for it, because recorded hours are the strongest line on a graduate resume in this career and they are the one thing a general business degree cannot fake. | Ask the provider about a local, regional or remote arrangement before you rule it out, and if there is genuinely none, build the same evidence with a part-time role in an operations team and write it up in the same shape: problem, process, measure, outcome. A written-up piece of real process work is worth the same in an interview as a placement that was not credit-bearing. Estimate |
| Whether to add a postgraduate qualification | Two to three years into the role, when you know which half of the work you want | Do the short postgraduate certificate rather than a masters. The Queensland University of Technology Graduate Certificate in Business Analysis is 26 weeks and is the only postgraduate qualification in the register whose title names the job. | If it is not offered in your year, the International Institute of Business Analysis's practitioner certification and a couple of postgraduate subjects in process management cover the same ground for a fraction of the money, and they are the vocabulary employers are actually buying. Estimate |
| Whether to certify at all | When a specific job advertisement names a credential | Take the entry level certification when a named employer asks for it, and not before. The entry level certification is US$395 or less including the first year of membership and requires no experience. | If no employer asks, learn the vocabulary instead. The Business Analysis Standard is free, the body of knowledge and the standard between them cover the whole profession, and the vocabulary is what interviews are conducted in. A certificate nobody asked for is a cost, not a credential. Verified fact |
If the whole pathway closes
If you do not get a place in the course you wanted, the register holds 119 providers and 629 courses across the management and commerce fields alone, and employers recruit from hundreds of them. A Bachelor of Business from a provider you can get into is not a second-best outcome; it is the same job with a different label on the certificate. Verified fact
If you are two years into a business degree and realise you wanted the technical half, the industry systems degree is a year away and the ICT analyst group pays more. Adding a database subject and a statistics minor to the business degree you are already doing is the cheaper version of the same move, and it does not cost you a year. Estimate
If you cannot find a work component, take a part-time role in an operations team and write it up as evidence. The register records work hours for many business degrees but not all, and a written-up piece of process work counts for the same thing in an interview as a placement that was not credit-bearing. Estimate
If the analysis market is cold in the year you graduate, a business degree has a very wide exit into finance, marketing, human resources, operations and general management, and the money panel's fourteen-year break-even assumes you are paid to do analysis, which is a condition you should not leave to chance. Keep the degree general enough that you can. Estimate
Mistakes to avoid
The most common
- Choosing the course by its title. Only one undergraduate qualification in the register puts the words business analysis in its title, and it is an information technology degree rather than a business one. Ten providers put business analytics in the title and they differ in which funding band they sit in, which subject you actually study and whether they record a work component. Verified fact
- Believing the qualification is what gets you the job. 75.2 per cent of the people in the occupation hold a degree or above and 24.8 per cent hold no degree at all, and there is no registration to complete and no protected title. What separates candidates is evidence that you can define something. Verified fact
- Ignoring the field of education when you compare two courses with the same name. The same title sits in two student contribution bands, $17,399 and $9,537 for 2026, and the difference over a three-year degree is $23,586. Verified fact
- Paying for a postgraduate qualification before you have done the job. Nothing after the degree is compulsory in this career, and a certificate taken before you have defined anything in practice teaches you vocabulary you cannot yet use. Estimate
And the less obvious
- Reading the data analyst and the business analyst as the same job. They are separate occupations with separate numbers: 105,800 people in management and organisation analysts at a $2,444 median weekly earnings, and 51,000 in the ICT analyst group at $2,697, of whom 20,300 are classified as ICT business analysts. A business analyst title in a bank is usually an ICT role that wants SQL and data modelling, and the same title in a consulting firm is usually not. Verified fact
- Assuming the analyst title arrives with the job. The work is 82.4 per cent concentrated in New South Wales, Victoria and Queensland, so moving is part of the career, and the title very often arrives after the experience rather than with it. An operations analyst who rebuilt a rostering process and measured the saving is a stronger candidate than a graduate with a business degree and no evidence. Estimate
- Over-specialising in the technical half. A statistics or computer science degree with no business context is a common route into this market and it closes the door on the finance, operations and management work that makes up the larger of the two occupations. The business half is the scarce half, which is why it is worth less to you and more to them. Estimate
- Treating the unpaid work component as free. It is a large number of hours, it is unpaid, and it happens while you would otherwise be earning. The register records it for many of these degrees and it is the one part of the degree a graduate without it cannot compete on. Verified fact
What to read, watch and do
Generic to the career, not to you — start anywhere. Most of these cost nothing.
The Business Analysis Standard
It is the one document that says what a business analyst is supposed to be able to do, in plain language, and it is free. Read it before you consider any certification, because it tells you which of the certification areas you actually need and which you are paying for unnecessarily. Verified fact
IIBA Entry Certificate in Business Analysis (ECBA)
This is the credential that appears in job descriptions when a credential appears at all, and it has no experience requirement, so it is the one you can take while you are still studying. It is also the cheapest route into the body of knowledge, and the entry level is deliberately built for people new to the field. Verified fact
The Business Analysis Body of Knowledge Guide
This is the framework the profession is organised around and the one most Australian job descriptions are quietly written against. It is a paid publication, so read the free Business Analysis Standard first and buy this only when you need the detail, usually once you are working and can place what you read against a live problem. Verified fact
The Agile Manifesto and the Twelve Principles
Half the job descriptions in this market ask for agile, and this is where the vocabulary comes from. It is four sentences and twelve principles long, it is free, and being able to explain why the right-hand column matters is what separates a business analyst from a requirements collector in a meeting. Verified fact
The Scrum Guide
It is the most-read document in the industry and it is short enough to read in one sitting. It will not make you a scrum master and it is not a career plan, but it is the shared reference point when a delivery team talks about sprints, and being able to find a definition in it rather than guess is a small but real advantage. Verified fact
Agile Alliance
It maintains the Agile Practice Guide, it runs events in Australia, and its members can download that guide free. It is also where the vocabulary in this market is argued out in public, which is a better way to learn what a term means than a glossary. Verified fact
IIBA Australia Chapter
The Australian chapter of the body that publishes the standard, running events, study groups and mentoring for people in the field. It is the cheapest way to meet the people who hire and mentor analysts in Australia, and the network is the part that is genuinely hard to build on your own. Verified fact
Jobs and Skills Australia occupation profile for Management and Organisation Analysts (ANZSCO 2247)
It is the only place that says how many people actually do this work, what they earn, where they live, how old they are and how many of them have no degree. It is also the labour market evidence you want when you have to explain to someone why you are studying this rather than something else. Verified fact
QILT Graduate Outcomes Survey
It is the only survey of what graduates actually earn and actually do after they leave, and it separates full-time work from casual and part-time work, which job advertisements never do. Read the business and management chapter before you accept an offer, because it is the closest thing to knowing what your degree is worth. Verified fact
Australian Undergraduate Business Case Competition
It is the closest thing Australia has to a business analysis competition, and it is run the way real consulting work is: a case, a team, a presentation to a panel of senior people, and a working session the night before. The teams are mixed and the judging is on the quality of the thinking rather than the polish, which is exactly the skill a business analyst is hired for. Verified fact
Eight ways of asking which route is best
There is no single best route into business analysis, and any panel that gives you one is guessing. These eight answers disagree with each other on purpose: the cheapest route is not the fastest, the fastest is not the most prestigious, and the most prestigious is not the one that will still be working in ten years. Which one is right for you depends on things this document does not know about you, and each answer says what it needs to know. Estimate
The one thing every lens agrees on is the shape of the degree rather than its name. There is no registration to complete, no protected title and no professional body whose membership you must hold, so nothing in this career is gated behind a credential. What is gated is the employer: they are deciding whether you can define a problem, and they want evidence. So the question underneath all eight lenses is not which degree is best, it is which one leaves you with something to show. Estimate
The second thing they agree on is the field of education. A business analytics degree at one university can sit in the higher student contribution band and the same title at another sits in the lower one, and the difference over three years is $23,586. That is a larger number than most scholarships, and it is the cheapest decision in this document to get right. Verified fact
And the third is work hours. The register records required work components in these degrees running from 80 hours at Edith Cowan University to 165 at Deakin, 240 at Central Queensland University and 450 in the Federation University Bachelor of Information Technology (Business Analysis). Those are unpaid hours in a workplace, and they are the evidence that separates a graduate from every other graduate in the room. Verified fact
The mistakes that cost the most, and the ones nobody warns you about
The first group below is the mistakes nearly everyone makes. The second group is the ones that only show up after you have been in the work for a while, and they are the more expensive of the two. Estimate
The less obvious mistakes share a shape: they are all reasonable decisions that quietly narrow your options, and none of them feel like a mistake while you are making them. Specialising in the technical half closes the larger of the two occupations. Believing the title arrives with the job makes you wait for a job that is going to be offered to someone with evidence instead. And treating the unpaid work component as free quietly removes the one thing your degree was uniquely for. Estimate
