What the job actually is

Architecture is far less about sketching beautiful buildings than most students expect. The concept design that makes the magazines is a small share of the work; most of an architect's time goes into documentation, coordinating engineers and builders, meeting building codes and planning rules, and managing clients and budgets. It is a long training path, and the title architect is legally protected until you register. Opinion

Most architects work in private practices, from sole practitioners to large firms with hundreds of staff. Estimate

Government and public works

About these figures

Jobs and Skills Australia groups architects with landscape architects, so these figures cover both. Verified fact

The title architect is protected

Registration includes the Architectural Practice Examination, run nationally. Verified fact

How registration works

The Architects Accreditation Council of Australia runs the Architectural Practice Examination, one of the steps to registration. Verified fact

Registration is handled by state and territory architects boards and usually needs an accredited master's degree, about two years of practical experience, and passing the examination. Estimate

How to read this table

Institution names, course names, campuses, durations and work hours are copied from the CRICOS register. Verified fact

CRICOS lists courses open to international students, so a domestic-only course will not appear here even if it is well established. Opinion

5 of 17 institutions carry a real, dated selection rank from UAC or TISC. Ranks published for a different course or an unidentifiable campus were not reused; the rest read not verified. Opinion

Admissions centres also list these courses that are not in this field of the register: University of Sydney, Bachelor of Design in Architecture, 92.00; UNSW Sydney, Bachelor of Architectural Studies, listed by UAC without a published rank; Curtin University, Bachelor of Applied Science (Architectural Science), TISC minimum and lowest offered 70.00. General information only — not financial advice

The figures in this section are indicative estimates only and are general in nature. They are modelled from published rates and typical costs, and they take no account of your personal objectives, financial situation or needs.

They are not quotes, and they are not a projection of what you personally will pay or earn. Course fees, indexation rates, salaries and repayment thresholds all change.

Before you act on any of it, speak to a qualified financial adviser about your own circumstances, and confirm course costs and fees directly with the institution and your state admissions centre.

A starting salary of $65,000 for a graduate of architecture before registration. Estimate
